I recently acquired a 1944 Chevy 1 1/2 ton pickup. It came with a 2-speed rear and I was wondering if it hooking it up to a 3:55 rear would make it whine or if the trans wasn't geared any differently. Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure what your question is. What is your transmission, a three speed or four speed? Most transmissions, the final gear ratio (like high gear) is 1:1. You said that the rear end is a 2-speed, what are its ratio's? If you are trying to get some speed in high gear, then the 3:55's might help; if they are higher gears than what is in the truck now.
It's a four speed with reverse lockout. Don't know if that helps. I don't know the gearing, which is basically my question. I don't know if the 2 speed rear effectively knocks down the speed in low gear or pushes it up in high. I'm basically taking a big *** farm truck and putting it on an s10 and don't know if I need a new trans or not.
Short answer is yes you need to do something about that trans. It is a non-snycroed 4 speed, ya wanta play big truck driver and double clutch keep it. The low side of a 2 speed rear was lower normaly than the same truck with a single speed rear. 2 speed rears were not for giving higher top speed.
