All right, I guess I should finally introduce myself. Ive been reading this site for nearly a year now, but I rarely feel the need to post so Ive never bothered with the intro. I live in Chicago, and my current project is a 1949 Ford. Its a mostly complete and not-too-badly rusted field car. Im just going for a late 50s or so everyday kind of hotrod. Flathead powered of course. The kind of car my dad would have built, back when he actually did that. The neighborhood thugs think I should do a lowrider, hence I am "the gringo". This is my first real project, and it continually progresses beyond my skill level, forcing me to learn what the hell Im doing. Reading the HAMB has been a great resource for that. Im amazed by the amount of knowledge and the skill of many of the members of this board. It most discussions theres nothing intelligent that I can add, everythings already been said by the time I read the post. I am a metallurgist, so hopefully I can provide some input on that subject. I currently work in primarily in the aerospace and defense industry, and also in the racing industry (gears, axles, camshafts). In the past Ive worked in about every aspect of the steel industry, including OEM automotive (sheet steels & welding), stainless steels for cutlery, firearms, bolts & fasteners, etc. Hell, this makes me sound old, but Im not even 30 yet. Anyway, I see that 38Chev454 is the official HAMB metallurgist, so I guess I can just offer a second opinion. Of course, since Im an engineer I KNOW that my answer is the right one! (sarcasm intended)
Hey gringo, no need for sarcasm. We can always use more opinions around here. Glad you are around to offer another perspective based on experience and knowledge, there is a lot of bad advice from old wive's tales and such that is presented here, i just try to give the facts and let people make their own judgements. I have been around here for many years, and I am a real metallurgical engineer, at least that is what my degree says. I used to work in aerospace and automotive industries, now I work on nukes. The official HAMB metallurgist****le was given by Ryan, back on an old version it was under my name, now with the new version it does not give any special****le. Now it is more of a description than an absolute. Don;t get too serious about stuff, we all are trying to help out and build our cars better. Sometimes we do not have all the facts and have to make judgements based on limited info. Just try and not spread bad info that people have picked up over the years. See you around, Terry
