Technical Chieftain turn signal switch help

Ok, I managed to pick this 50’s Chieftain turn signal switch up with a dead harness. I tossed the wires but kept the switch as I am contemplating installing turn signal lights on my Model A. Unfortunately, the idiots on the road may demand that i do this.

So does anyone know about these indicators and do they wire up like the Signal Stat units? I was thinking of just doing lights on the rear as that is the hard part for people to see how I am signaling. I will not be using the brake or any other lights that are on the car now. The lights will all be separate. The other unit is a donor unit. I hope I can use it on 6v positive ground.

Since you're running separate brake and turn signal lights, you're in a good position to shop around some more, and see if you can find a 3 or 4 wire switch, that's actually really old.

I'd aim for something like this, not necessarily this specific one, but the same basic design.

Somewhere between 1949 & 1952, Pontiac did in fact offer emergency flasher function. Have only run into 2 cars with it so far, & no idea which year the cars were.

 

@1930artdeco , how many wires does the switch you want to use have?

 

CRAZY STEVE-thanks, I did find your post about the aftermarket turn signal switches and how to decipher them. I will reread them to make sure I understand you directions.

SQUIRRELL-I will check them out. I actually like the second one better. I think it will match my car better than the Chieftain that I have. It is in really good shape but look wise.....

PPRATHER-I will verify tonight the number of wires. But after skimming Crazy Steve's post I think I will be looking for a 4 wire set up.

The turn switch is just a switch, just a more complicated one than normal. Determine which wires do what, then if you only want turns only, ignore the other wires.

 

I picked up a neat old TS switch and the colors were gone (well the wiring was junk) and had no clue on how to test (my brain doesn't always follow logic. I kind of like telling, and being told, by the idiots on the road where they think they are going. Anything that indicaates to them that I might not be continuing the same speed and direction along my path increases the slight chance they are paying attention and not slamming in to me-again.
