Hello, just wondering what people experience in paint harding after a new paint job. My paint is 90 days old and I still feel like I could chip without a lot of effort. I have a few woops but nothing to bad. It's better then when I first got it.
After 90 days it’s gonna do what it’s gonna do Just be careful, get some help and take up edges as ya go. Put a ton of cars together painted without scratching em But it happens sometimes.
Lots of blue tape. We used to get a plastic tape. It was great for ***embly. But if you missed a hunk of tape and tightened the fender to the frame. You can’t get the tape back. AKA a blue roadster in Texas
Just accept that there is going to be some level of touch up required after you ***emble everything. There is no way that I can see to put one of these things back together without dinging something. Taping edges and covering things while ***embling helps. So does having an extra set of hands when you do it, but be prepared to touch things up.
I've never been a painter or body man so when I spend the exorbitant money it takes these years for a quality paint job I've resolved myself to having the body/paint shop ***emble the car. I usually take them the finished ch***is when they're done with the paint. Takes the pressure off me for any ***embly damage.
yup, tape the edges. I always "fuzz up" the tape by sticking it to my jeans before I put it on the paint so it can't possibly remove paint when it is peeled off. You are supposed to have enough adhesion in the paint so that will not happen , I just never wanted to take any un necessary chances
If peeling off tape is going to lift your paint you have done something wrong and it will fail eventually anyways. Might as well know before the car is all put back together.
Somehow my latest one got really beat up between getting painted by a PO 4o years ago, and me ***embling it last year. So, don't let it sit around!
blue cheap tape that is painters tape dosnt stick well enough for autobody but works great for edges and protecting things because it wont overstick and peel paint , and as anthony said above dont leave it on any longer than needed , and dont let it get wet or left in sun ,,, bee carefull get (qualified) 2nd set of (patient) hands just to get stuff on there and out of danger , you can do the adjusting solo after that ,,,, i personally have been ***embling/trimout finished paint vehicles and am well accomplished in this , for well over 30yrs and i still have to say " thats why they call it a touch up paint and thats why they call it a touch up brush" dont freak out stuff happens Trimmers tip of the Year ,,, allways do the RIGHT /P*** side first on every step , think of as a dry run because the drivers side has to be perfect , gaskets windows latches hinges chrome everything do p*** side first everytime !!! fabricator john miss you dad
...and make sure all your fasteners are in the best shape you can muster. Rusty, gunked up threads and stripped/rounded heads is asking for heartache. Clean to bare metal if a ground is part of the deal (battery cable, light socket, etc.).
I agree, I do across the tee shirt I’m wearing, it takes about 1/2 the stickyness off the tape what ever color it is. An old car painter showed me that over 50 years ago when we only had masking tape….
I always tape edges, and when I remove the tape, I carefully remove it from the panel side towards the edge. I also work slowly and carefully. Don't rip it off like it was a bandage.
Go to local craft store and buy a package of various size teeny brushes, super teeny to almost huge. Have spare pint of exact color paint waiting. Do not drink coffee before mating the two.
My painter said to me don't fix anything and bring it back when it's back together for final buff and repair. His stated its going to happen. He has my paint at his shop to fix my nicks.
