Chop it take some of the crown out of the rear window roof area get rid of the hump and it'll be smoothe as silk.
HAMB'er Mbartils de-crowned his Merc, and the results are Sin-sational! His build thread is HERE:https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1949-mercury-2-door.1082160/page-3
Here's a 3rd version, keeping the door modification but also taking out some of the bump in the back of the roof. Looks nice, still not technically chopped but getting more in-depth with metalwork, this involved leaning the rear window forward, then cutting off the back half of the top of the roof and sliding it forward to match the new rear window angle. For reference, this is the untouched picture Here's the new pic, no chop but with the raised door line and reworked roof "hump"
I'd at least get it in primer and drive then decide. I wouldn't chop it myself, but if you do realize it's opening up a can of worms as in it has to be done right or it will really mess up the lines and looks of the car and 2: it's going to take a lot of work fitting and refitting patch panels to bring all the lines and contours together to make it look right. I say leave it alone, drive it and enjoy!
Had to do another one. Lowered headlights, Chopped with reshaped rear of roof and sharpened up the back corner of the door window opening.
no chops better than a bad 1, so keeo that in mind, but if dont right would make a world of diffrence
If you know what you're doing - or know someone that does - then yeah, chop that thing. I'm surprised by all the 'don't chop' advocates because that thing has the biggest, gangliest roofline of any 3w car I've ever seen. Yes drop the side window openings. Yes ditch the ridiculous barn door vent windows. And then cut it, get the crown out of it, and lay down that back gl*** using the Cole Foster / Kirk Hammett '36 Ford as inspiration. The rest of that Pontiac is bad ***. I love that grille and hood trim.
Ya it will have all the body work done and in primer this weekend I will get a good side shot tomarrow hopefully some one would be cool enough to do that for me
Thanks man ya I'm on the fence I've chopped trucks but ya it does have a serious nose ..... it will be bagged
That's the only one I can find .... I like the look of it I would love to know how much they took out of it
That car was my inspiration on doin the chop I love that thing .... metal is what I do all day I'm not worried about the work I just want to see what people think ... I was planning on doin the chop, baggin it, suicide the doors and a bunch of other body mods
Thanks for opening us up to the thought processes. It has been fun seeing everyone's contributions. (I especially like the photo-shopped Caddy that CadMad posted above.) I hope you'll keep us up the build process, too. I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in how this one comes along.
I'm happy that people put there two cents in .... even though there are more no chop than chop I'm goin for it I can't wait to start cutting on this car .... I'm not sure where to post progress picks ? On this post?
So you ask everyones opinion and get over 50 replies. Most say NO don't do it. So now your going to chop it. Why did you even ask, if you weren't going to follow the majority opinion? Were you hoping we would all agree with you and stroke your ego? WTF
