This is only a mock up but I like a heavier chop 6 1/4".. Visibility is fine... new coupe 016.JPG

  4. I like to channel the width of the chassis or just enough to hide the chassis unless I am working with a nice looking chassis like a deuce.

On a 5 window coupe getting the quarter windows to not look wonky is difficult. So if I do not know the skill level of the chopper I don't usually suggest a mega chop. I do like the look of mail slots and if someone is willing to work with the quarter windows a dollar bill chop is a beautiful thing, perhaps not practical but beautiful. If you get the quarters wrong you have ruined it.

I don't agree that a mild chop is a waste, sometimes subtle can be good. it depends on what the builder is after. Sometimes the cars that are most intriguing are those that you can't tell at a glance what has been done. ;) Hell I may even be temped to shove the firewall back against the dash rail and then cover it with a hood. :D

I hadn't considered modification to the quarter Windows. With the pilar height set, and the upper and lower bead with respect to the door, what mods would one make?
I wouldn't want to call out anyone's car, but if you have examples of what your talking about here, maybe pm me, I'd be really interested in seeing the difference.

IMHO, this is a very nice chop. The car is owned by a Hamber who posted in reference to the same subject some time ago. I think this is a 2" chop.

Mines chopped 4 and 5/8" this gave me 1/8" above the minimum screen height here in New Zealand in the centre. Sits on 32 rails and I have channelled the car 3/4" so you can't see the gap/join where the body meets the chassis.
I have a Wise guys bench seat made for a chopped vehicle, I'm 6'2" and when seated I have 4" of head room.

Just for a reference when I sit in my stock 62 Thunderbird I have about 1" head room, so for me the coupe has shit loads at 4"

  11. I agree with you, 3" looks about right. The proportions for all the widows come out looking good at that point.

Another trick I've read about is to NOT cut the REAR window as much so it doesn't get the "mail slot" look. I think the more heavy chops LOOK gnarley as hell, but unless a lot of thought is put into it, driving is more difficult, at least for an un-flexible old man like me! ( I do always keep the ibuprofen handy though). Used to smell like teen spirit, now it's Ben Gay!
Here's another before and after- 3 1/2 " off the top.
2003 and now ( I didn't chop it, I liked it full height)

"maicoman" who started this thread; why don´t You increase any pic of Your car? or any comment after you started conversation.

I had +10y ago this 31 coupe. Chopped only 2", maybe need little more,....
If i had now A-coupe, I would change quarter window shape (form). It looks little strange,....

  16. I have a 31 coupe that is chopped 4 inches as best as I can tell. The 1/4 window is square, I think that is about perfect. I'm 6'4" and I'm pretty comfortable in it.
