A customer of ours just bought a '38 Buick 5 window coupe. He's pretty sure he wants it chopped, somewhere around 3" and maybe angled with the back a bit lower. The look he's going for the low, rear skirted, full cutom traildragger. We're concerned about the window looking to short with the roof above the window so tall. Does anyone have any '36-'38 Buick coupe pics to help inspire us? Thanks.
I'm really not sure how one would look chopped...They're really long, and the top looks some what chopped anyway..Maybe just lower it a bit, step back and see what it looks like, and then see if the top needs to be cut. The cool part about a '38 is no wood....wood ****s. What are his plans for it? I think one would look sweet in a dark red, tail dragger stance, skirts, white walls, sombreros, and white guts, maybe a twin carbed straigt 8, or a nasty nail head....
Which series is it? That'll make a big difference as well. Personally I'm leaving mine unchopped as I think the proportions are right on. Here's where I'm going with it... Nailhead, white tuck and roll, 4 speed (just cause I have one). The one I've seen chopped looked squashed, but I think it's more that people go way to far and want cartoon cars. Maybe 2-3" could be done nicely.
We've actually got the car on site now, it's a '38 Special and it's in great shape. It's 100% stock for the time being, the only thing that's certain right now is a 401 swap. The customer's budget is much lower than I'm used to from him, so it'll probably stay uncut. It'll probably end up looking a whole lot like the one above. Zman, what are you planning to use for suspension to get it as low as you've got pictured?
This is my brother's ongoing project. I believe we chopped it 3 or 3 1/2. We left the rear window stock height, it's pretty small to begin with. We ended up putting a fiiller section across the roof instead of slanting the A pillars. It's a '36 by the way. Haven't tackled the doors yet, which is why they look out of whack. That was a "mock up" photo.
