  1. Fair enough Tinman,

Lets here you espouse about these mercs

Got a guess how "proper" and how much filler is in this one?

    Nope your wrong.

    Is this one more "proper"?

My point just so we are clear, the last one has 15 more years of experience, alot less filler, the welds are better, the panels fit better etc..

Were your early builds better or worse than your present projects?

My early builds werent as good as what I do now, and nobodys first attempts are perfect, so whats your point?

However, my first builds I talked and listened to experts, got some coaching from them too. From the get go I at least tried to do things the correct way.

Like I said, I could care less what anyone thinks of the car, just dont tell me how great a job he did, or that he has skill.

A few more builds under his belt, yeah he may get skills and this would be a learning experience that helped to get him there, if so great.

Damn. Its bitter in here. I usually don't like radical stuff like this, but find this pretty danged cool. It's his ride and he has the right to do anything he damn well wish's with it.

  5. I think the term you meant to use is "(couldn't) care less what anyone thinks", but its your story. I don't know that anyone here was "telling" you anything.

My POINT was indicated at the bottom of the post, you can tell it was my POINT because I wrote "My point just so we are clear...."

Since its evident that you don't read well,

I'll ask it again - with your coached and skilled insight how much filler in the first merc?

How much lead filler did the traditional builders use back in the day? Isn't why they called them lead sleds because of the weight of all the lead filler. Why all the lead weight if there was nothing to cover up?

One has to learn skill, one is not born with it. So the car might not be the best as for as skill is concerned, But it takes balls to even give a project like this life. As for as skills ...he sure has detirmination to get it this far and as he goes he will get skill. Skill comes from practice. You get practice by doing. Period! Give the guy some beathing room, Let him learn from his experences with his car. Instead of cutting the car down, tell him how he could do it better the next time. All trash talk does is chase people away from this hobbie . Tim

Your right, I'm an idiot, egomaniac or what ever, I mean geez, its not like we haven't learned better ways of building cars in the last hundred years. And the techniques for working sheetmetal hasnt changed at all in the last 500 years or so.

You must have ran out of valid points to argue about as you have reverted back to the attack the grammer stuff. As for the telling me stuff part, I read several posts saying good job, or you got skills, was that my ego getting in my eye?

The idea here is show and tell the guy how to do it properly next time.....
NOT to encourage him to do the same thing again. There is all the proper techniques for pulling something off like correctly right here on the Hamb, or over here: www.metalmeet.com And just so you know it can be done with normal shop tools, and some time. You don't need english wheels, pulmaxes, or a million $$$$ worth of tools to build a nice car. These things help but arent the only way to get the job done correctly.

As for how much bondont is in the merc, I dont care, that guy hasnt posted a thread showing how bad he screwed up before he spread the bondont with a yardstick.

    Go piss up a rope.

  12. I like the front/grille area, looks like a Hudson!

  13. You win, the chip on your shoulder has less body filler than anyone else's.

in all truth i think its kinda " R " wordy for this site, and the metal work is shit compared to most of the other builds, but i thought it would be good to show for the people that want to just try the shit out for themselves its not as scary as you would think

Southpark, I have to give you credit too. These custom projects always look pretty scary. You've taken some hits and kept positive. :) You shared a lot of pics and that's brave in itself. I know you'll continue to enjoy your car and quite a few folks want to see how she turns out when you're done.

I kind of think maybe I started the shit storm here. I tried to stay out of it but when I saw he got another I couldn't help it.

gotta give him props for his enthusiasm and good attitude in light of some of our negative comments, and he sure got it done pretty quick.

I just gotta ask, why didn't you rob the V8 from the car and put it in the original frame?

Or pickup 4.3 v6 S10 chassis, v8 just about bolts in, and it would fit the stock body.

original frame was rusted out real bad at the bottom. i wanted to use a s10 but couldnt find one, i relize i could of kept looking until i found one but the caprice came along after i had been looking for so long i got it instead.

ive built a quite a few cars, but this was mt first real chop ( proly 10 model a's)
and i learned lots of new things while building this car, that i will take on to the next build. i truley have ahd a blast building this car and cant wait til this winter to get started on the bodywork and get it painted.

as far as staying postive, everybody can trash talk all they want.... as im out driving.

what can i say im just a 23 year old kid who loves building cars.

Man the less I come here lately the less I miss it.

My opinion? The car is a total ass ugly pile. But, you are 23 and the cars you will be able to do in 10 years will be out of control if you can even get this to open and close the doors now. Badass man.

I do however remember your name from you being a meanie on here, so I guess it's payback ;)

Further, this was a rotted to death $200 early 50s Chevy 4 door. I can't possibly think of a more worthless car to start with. Nope...still can't. Shit man, go nuts!

Lastly, RocketDaemon...every time I see your avatar you have more tattoos! Is that really a tattoo across your face? Youre a friggin wild man!

I'm really not into frame swaps and such on cars that all ready have a heavy frame, and yes you said it was rusted out, but how hard is it to fix a frame? If some one can build one from a few sticks of metal, why can't you patch up the old?

We've got a '54 F100 in the shop that the owner tried to swap onto a '70 something F150 chasis...It's a nightmare. I would much rather deal with issues on a factory set up then with something cobbled underneath.

What I don't understand is you could save up a bit of cash, and "mondernize" your existing frame with IFS, disc brakes, and power steering. But instead people chose to coble up something...Yes I know there have been attempts at frame swaps that have turned out well...But most well done jobs took as much time as it would to modify the original chasis.

As for metal work and ruining a cool car, I'm not going there...because I never really thought of 4dr chevies as cool cars to begin with.

Good luck with the next project.

    I like this one better.

I would have found a narrower frame or a good replacement. The proportions look all wrong.

I'm loving it more each time I look at it! Drive the wheels off, forget about clear coating and let's get busy making some natural patina (rust) as a top coat!

I got just a tad over $3000.00 in parts sales from a rotten 51 4 door. the only usable part on the body was the hood and trunk. not worthless at all in my book.

Personally, I look at the work involved and think - whoa...determined.

I look at the pictures he's posted, the things he's said, consider your opinions, and think, HMM......but then again, my 'project' isn't driving yet & this guy is out having fun. I can't say shit.

Then I wonder, if this car had slick paint and straight bodywork on it with no build up pictures; just a glossy pic or two in a magazine; or if some well respected and known 'pro' built this, all painted up, upholstered and shiny...to all the naysayers-- would you still feel the same?

He's young and learning...at least he wasn't a 23 year old who saw the scrap value with no mechanical aptitude and scrapped it for weed money. :D
