[ QUOTE ] It has everything to do with his post. I would venture to say that is the same reason he has a more door comet (cheaper). He is lookin for inspiration and people like DrJ (flatbed) seem to think because he's got e coupla extra doors his shit ain't worth buildin'. I say flatbeds still suck, build the fuck out of it kid and show 'em all... [/ QUOTE ] Builtbyme... Thats an interesting point. Kustomizer, your Comet looks great the way it is. In my opinion, I wouldn't bother with the Cragars. Those full moons look really good. That suicide rear door idea is neat too (whoever said that). Fat Hack..... You worry me, friend.... Builtbyme.... Even though I think your point is a good one. You can go piss up a rope over your opinions on Flat Beds.... Later, JT.
i like the 6 cyl. Unless your building a go fast car i think the only good part about a v8 is the sound. I think my 6 sounds good thats why im keeping it! Thanks for the feedback! Nate
Just needs a little tweakin Rat Rodder... Sorry bout the size. Gotta get some editing software 'stead of using Paint.
yeah its rustoleum rusty metal primer. Its 7 bucks a quart. I plan on doing the body work soon and metalflake paint galour! Nate
yeah i sprayed it with my gun, if you thin the paint at all it takes forever to dry. The paint fades easy and i wouldnt recomend putting on your car unless you want it to look like crap. I dont like trying to do stuff the cheap way anymore, im taking my time and saving money because my experience is if you do it cheap and not right it looks like crap. Just my 2 cents. Thanks Nate
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Yeah, its is lowered and i have 3 4 lug cragar s/s and i need one more then ill get 1 inch whitewalls for it and im going to do the body in a mettalic red and the top in heavy metalflake red with white outline of the body and scallops. Anybody have one 4 lug, 13 inch cragar s/s they want to sell? Thanks for all the advice Nate [/ QUOTE ] Sounds like you want it to be a lowrider more than a custom. See if Kojak will lend you his visor. [/ QUOTE ] Dude. It would look sick on that car. You'd have all the bitches. I think the concerns about the car have all be posted, so there isn't much else to say. I do have to admit that froom the photochop there, it would look badass if it did have a chop. But if I was going through the trouble to give that A shot, I think I might wait for a two door. It would look a bit better, and I think it would be easier on you for the first time. The Unibody part is probably your first concern... you'd definatly want to find someone who knows what they are doing, other wise you're going to take the chance of totally fucking up a really nice ride. I love those early fords/mercs. Take what folks have said and think about it! Except about the fucking visor.
Yeah im going to do it up like a 60s style mild custom. Metalflake galour with skinny whites and cragars for now! thanks for all the input. Nate
I've cut up plenty of unibody cars and put them back together. When I was in college I cut a shitty ass dodge spirit in two pieces then cut the ass end off of a donor car to make one good car for the teachers son. Cut the top off of a volkswagon rabbit took the doors off and made a dune buggy out of it once. Every body makes mild custom 60's cars fuck that do something different. I'm also going to help a buddy of mine chop his 63 falcon 2dr sedan when I get my 54 done. Cut up plenty of late model firebirds and camaros to in past years. Plus there is other crap that I probably have forgot about.
So then, you can explain to Nate the proper procedure for splicing the A and B pilars? So that the solid steering shaft doesn't rip a hole in his chest if he ever gets front ended, and the A pilar lets go?
Geez..I lay low for a while and look what happens. Just kidding. Nate, I drive a uni-body car that I chopped 3.5". No twist, no flex, no craked glass, no shit. If you want to chop it,besides completely gutting it, start by forming x-braces at the b- pillars right below where you plan on making the bottom cut of your 4 inch chop. Weld it to the pillar on one side and the floor to the opposite side, do the same with another piece ( I'd use 3/4" conduit) from the other pillar and weld where they intersect. This will keep the sides of the car from wanting to fall in. Then, with the glass out front and rear, take the same conduit and measure from the top pinch weld that the wheatherstrip holds onto to the bottom one. Do the same for the rear window and cut 3 pieces that length for each opening. Why? Because the way I did mine, I didn't cut into the A-pillar, My front windshield is leaned back and rear glass leaned forward. The windshield was done by cutting the roof off about an inch behind where the pillar meets the roof (it is a vertical cut) and through the roof skin across to the other side. By cutting there, it makes it easier to line it back up due to the extra material. Then, at the base of the pillar, take a wedge cut far enough in to allow the pillar to lean back. Take a grip of measurements! You can never have too many of the stock top as a reference for the chop. You do want a squared-up roof, right? Also, to get the pillar back, it will be neccessary to either cut through the inner skin of the fire wall or through the cowl. The dash will have to be cut out for the chop anyway so the choice is up to you, I've done them both ways. I did mine through the cowl and cowl vent which I sheeted while welding the top back on..we don't need no stinking vents! Air gets pulled through the inside of the front fenders so you're not sealing any thing off completely. The cowl cut also helps the wipers because they will end up leaning the same as the windshield. Anyway I can go on for days, but the point is it can and has been done. About the column in the chest thing, it will happen either way so I wouldn't worry about it. Cars from the 60's WERE crumple zones. If you are that worried, get a fucking collapseable column. I figure if I die in my car I'll die happy so personally, I don't care. Good luck with the chop, and remember..Measure, measure, measure, and brace it. and if you notice the car sags in the rockers with the top off, support it with a floor jack when you weld it back together. Mine didn't but I've seen cars that sagged and had one that bowed up, which was fixed by putting a jack undr the rear of the car and lifting untill it was gone. You will know if anything moved by checking the door gaps, if they aren't the same as they were before you cut, it moved. later. Btw, I've done 7 chops with no problems that couldn't easily be fixed..just expect shit to go wrong. In all actuality, I dig your ride just as it sits, but cut what you want. Just think about it alot and lay tape lines over the side glass to better visualize the profile you wish to achieve. Some days I wish I cut a 4 door and some days I don't think I should of cut it at all (usually when I hit my head getting in).
......MY opinion????........(for what it's worth).......leave it alone! It's a sweet lookin' ride as it sits!!
I think the roof is too square to chop and look right. Put an Corvair roof on it or something...or leave it alone. A chopped car with unmodified floor pan (as in dropped) makes me claustraphobic! Then again, the only chopped car I have ridden in was a Civic (don't laugh!)
Man, are people STILL replying to this thread? The idea of chopping the Comet is SOOO "last week"! Nate has moved on. He's now going make it into a retro rod -- fenderless, with brass lantern headlamps, pink and white candy stripe interior, and a 5' tall retractable carriage roof. I sent him a "gay nineties" straw hat with red/white/blue band and a cane to twirl while stopped at intersections. Straw hats, handlebar moustaches, and seersucker suits are punk rawk, so step off.
