Where is the best location to chop the A pillar? I can take 3" out between the upper hinge and the windshield pivot stud with 1/4" left on either side of the cut. That seems a little tight for the metal work but it would save some time moving the stud. Am I overthinking this?
Chop the A-post below the windshield pivot stud. That way, the geometry between the stud & top hinge doesn't change & the windshield can pivot outward using the stock brackets, washers & knurled knobs. I'll post some pics tomorrow.
Here is how I did the 3 chop on my 31 tudor. I actually split the corners of the post and worked the edges until they basically lined up then welded the corners back up, some grinding with a disc and it really worked out well. .
I have some chop pics in my thread in the early pages. There may be some details that help. @Just Gary gives good advice, my windshield pivot studs are a little low. I/we didn't know better back then.
Pics as promised. Just like @lostone, I cut vertical slices to help align the posts. Lots more pics in my chop thread. My welding has improved a bit since then. Tudor Update: Angle-Chopping a 28 Ford | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
Brent, It looks like you took the chop out of the bottom of your windshield frame instead of the top. That would put your stud and windshield frame bracket back in line with each other. That seems to be what makes them work right? I'm going to cut my windshield frame at the top where it separates from the top bar of the frame. So if I cut the A post below the stud I will either have to move the stud to match the frame bracket or visa-versa. That's why I was thinking about cutting the post above the stud, nothing has to be moved, It's just a really tight cut. Gary, your 28 is a little different than a 30. It has a little more room under the stud.
