Chopping...again

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by greaserboi, Mar 8, 2006.

  1. I'm still new to chopping so I have a question for you fellow gearheads. How hard is it to chop a chevy 5 window pickup truck? I'd appreciate any help i could get.

go to a slavage yard and buy two shells. use the stripped down cars for practice. then you will know why it costs so much to have done, and if you are up to it.

I got two 3 window 53's. Looking at it, looks a hell of a lot easier to do than a 5 window. Extra glass (especially that curved corner type), is going to give you a big headache.

  5. So would you guys just recommend getting it done by pros? i'll do it if I have to.

  6. If its just a thought going thru your head. research all the possibilities including your own skill factor and equipment that you own.
there is only one series that had 5 windows 47-55.
you need to figure out if you want to lay the A pillars way back Sorchec style. or 4 way the roof which requires 8 welds across the roof unless you use a donor roof to fill the center then fill strips on 4 sections. I have photos of the whole deal. but haven't got my scanner up yet. I just did a chop, channel, section and streached cab took 31 days of long hours and still have some minor work left.
With any chop if you have doubts you probably need help

send Boyd Who a pm he has a website where he chopped a 3 window most would apply to a 5 window. My computer ate all my bookmarks or I'd post it.

Iam doing a 3 window alot more work that I first thought but it's getting there.

Perhaps I should get more pics and info together to add to the page. It seems like it gets alot of interest.

  9. Just got back from reading mags at the local market (doesn't take two to push a shopping cart) april issue of one of the old truck magazines has your chop going.

    Hey,

How heavy of a chop did you have in mind? "if" you can weld and read a
tape measure than you're on your way. I'd suggest ya read everything
that you can find on the subject, and than drege the HAMB posts on chops.

Five winders do present some ''interesting" challanges, but they have been
done before. Keep in mind that the back glass (cab corners) maybe tempered
and not cutable, ya may have to use plexiglass, which isn't legal in all states.

  11. corner windows are repo'd in laminated clear, green, grey and can be cut or ordered chopped. end of problem. I think if I was to do another one I'd leave the center window stock and cut the corners to match
I never like the corner windows so I filled mine.

I used to roofs when I did mine- back of one, front of the other. That way I didn't have to use a filler strip in the center. Cut them both long then trimmed to meet in the middle. Leaned the posts in a little to make things line up. I kept the corner windows, didn't seem to cause any problems with lining things up.

I have a five window also. thought about chopping but corner windows held me back. I don't think laminated glass can be cut easily and my glass guy didn't know where to get ones. I have seen a couple that have been done, looked awesome, but a three window would definately be easier. I would leave the back window close to stock height too. wouldn't take much of a chop to be left with a 4 inch tall back window

  18. If you decide to have someone chop your truck you give my buddy a call at the Drag-N-Shop-Joseph Garcia. I know this is'nt a 5 window Chevy but I posted it to show you what he is capable of, this truck has a 2 1/2" chop. If you need design ideas his younger brother 'D.A. Designs'-David Garcia is the man to see. His work will blow your mind. Hope this helps get you closer to rolling in a cool kustom truck.

You can get a lot of repro sheetmetal for Chevy trucks. I've seen roofs, inner cab and rear sections available in the new Custom Classic Trucks.

  20. Hey when your right your right! :D

the first post stated chev 5 window.

second post questioned what year? (not a bad question since 90% lie about being a 47-8 so they can park on some fair grounds! NOT THAT ANYTHINGS WRONG WITH THAT! )

I felt that the only options were the 47-55 cabs:)
