Chospped and sectioned shoebox: How is it frenched?

Check out this shoebox, Im going to be frenching mine soon and this is the look i want to replicate. I have the 54 Merc headlight rings and bezzels but this job looks much stubbier for lack of a better term.
Would you speculate that the rings are shortened before welding to the guards? also does it look like the buckets are recessed into the guards? I want the countersunk look but i dont want the rings to stick way out to achieve it.

I dont think thats the whole story, theres the recessed fit and chrome bezzels to consider.

 

My guess is they put the 54 merc headlith ring from the inside of the fender, so it look like stock headlite rim frenched, but with the chrome bezel ...

oh well 6 of one an a half dozen of the other,ends up looking the same, you just mount the stock bucket on the back side and use a Merc trim bezel

 

Looks like same style as Robs Radcliffe (?) shoebox. I asked and he said regular Merc rings then took 1/4-1/2 in from the back so they aren't so tunneled. I did the same and they look just like that
