I'd look at a Mooneyes silver metal flake three spoke wheel. I'd get the slotted, not the one with holes. Bigger the better, to me it looks more vintage.

    A) A 1965 T bird is not commonly considered a hot rod
    B) It's newer than the 64 cut off year for the HAMB
    C) Good luck with your chain wheel on a HOT ROD forum
    D) Flake it, panel paint it, lace it, Kelsy Hayes Wires

I have the popcorn and a soft drink ready, if it isn't closed soon this may be better than the movie on TCM tonight!

NO on the chain wheel, no on flames or scallops (although clams or shrimp might be "tasty"), no on cut outs!
T Birds from that era are classy and should stay that way.

do you have any ither questions we can answer for you?

  10. Donnie: I forgot to mention a friend of mine made a really neat wheel using 4 horse shoes. Welded the throwing ends onto a center hub;made a hoop out of chain and cast it in clear plastic.I have a pic but will have to post it later.

Seems like this Bird could make a pretty cool mild custom. They made a gazillion of those things...cutting it up a little is o.k.

My first thought was a 'flake wheel, possibly in silver. Just seems a little overdone. Yes, a T-Bird was not typically a hot rod but neither was a Rambler wagon a custom, but today we embrace (or some do) the "unique". I'm just trying to do something a little left of center. The chain wheel was just to get a rise out of you...it worked.
Oh, and yes, it's a '65 not a '64. Sorry if the one year newer/same body style upsets your HAMB rules.

I believe the forum cutoff is '65 and older, classifieds '64 and older per Ryan? Saw that somewhere just the other day. Anyway, it's a carryover from the '64 style, so it is o.k. either way.

Thanks for noting that. But I'm just another member. Yea, the HAMB isn't the same as it was, but everything goes through changes, some good, some bad.
I've seen plenty of T-Bird customs, beautiful cars, just wanted to do something a little different.

I'm not sure what I'd do with one of those, because they don't need much, but a quick search turned up a few mild customs.

No, unless your name is either Cheech or Chong. I like the idea of the factory wheel myself.

to the chain wheel no,,,,tho it could be unique it just screams cheezy.... (like those auoto zone, stick on buick port holes)..... on the other hand ,,this board is full of re-do'ers.followers...traditionlism,,,doing something over and over the exact same way as the first, with no change nor upgrade of any kind (close minded) with no room for growth..... with that said ,,,some things are better left alone,,,but some things hafta change... nothing was cool ,,untill someone made it cool..lol

Yep, I've downloaded all of those. The purple one is awesome. I like the black with green trim for it's simplisity.
    Typical...Supremes, narrow whites, custom paint.
I like the idea of a mild custom with hot rod influences. Maybe I'm too nonconforming...but isn't that what car building as all about?
I was building a "rat rod" before they came up with the term. I just thought I was building an old style hot rod. all of a sudden everyone wanted to build a rat rod, and the way they were building them was nothing like they did it back in the day, I mean whoever used a tractor grille on a hot rod in the 50s?
I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm saying they were .....nonconforming.

I had to go back and look at your post count because I was sure you were one of those first post trolls with that question. I always thought that those birds had a hell of a good looking steering wheel in them already.

If it doesn't have 10 inch wide 13 inch wire wheels and hydraulics it doesn't need a chain steering wheel.

Chrome steering wheels are simply too hot in summer. The PO installed an 'I Did It' column in my 57. he also installed a chrome steering wheel, I have not changed it yet, but I intend to before next summer.
