I'll spell it out for you...
Knowing the type of battery you need/want for your build is a good thing.
When someone asks what it's going into and they don't comprehend the situation after you tell them what the build is and the stoopid people have to try to look something up so that they can think that they'll make you look like you don't know what you're talking about in front of others. Then what you want is right there in front of them and they still argue with you telling you that it doesn't fit.
Oh, I didn't mention that I had pulled the same battery core and had it sitting on the counter.
Now, tell me, oh great one, why would I want to stick around and deal with someone who doesn't understand and who want's to argue with me and tell me that something doesn't exist when it's right out side?
So, yes, NAPA does know and they're smart enough to know where to look.. Their books still show products for 1950's motors.
    So, yea, stoopid is stoopid.

  3. I use Turtle wax spray wax on my cars, I've been to every auto parts store in town, as well as Walmart and can't find any Turtle wax product. I knew Dollar General carried it, so I went there, they had it, I bought 4 bottles. Is it a Turtle wax problem? I sure hope they don't go under.

I still remember the long conversation I got into at Napa trying to buy a ford starter solenoid, mentioned I was putting it on a chevy starter. I was about 17, old counter guy - Walt, told me I was an idiot, I walked past the counter, stuck my head in the managers office and asked if I was an idiot, could she come out and decide. The Napa manager was dating a fellow local racer and I helped pit crew for them.

F'n Walt. We finally got to a common ground where I could ask to just flip thru the books if it was something odd.
He was the BEST tractor and implement parts guy around, but I didn't have any tractors

They can't know everything, especially some of the weird and wonderful **** we get up to, but they need to learn to listen sometimes. You never know, they might just learn something.

Years ago, I was after a temperature switch to screw into an intake manifold. Simple on/off at a set temp. The older counter guy asked what make and model. I told him it didn't matter because I was using it to run a 700r4 transmission lockup system in an older car, and the switch was to only allow lockup once the engine was up to temp. I even had the Trident brand part number for him. Nope!!! He didn't want to hear it, and proceeded to argue that it wouldn't even work. I had designed and set up a few of these systems that did everything the computer could do, but without a computer. Eventually I gave up and went somewhere else.

Funny part was yet to come. That Friday night, my daughter heard him telling someone about it at a bar, and he was really ragging me out. Let's just say he got a free drink............ all over him. Gotta love that girl. I really enjoy walking into that shop now. He lets one of the other guys serve me.:)

That's genuine chrome on original 1954 steel. It cost me $650 Australian in 1999 for everything on the front plus the 2 door handles which were diecast metal and expensive to chrome. A mate got his done about 2 years ago and cost $3000 plus.

I like the parts counter stories.
When I was wiring up a ‘42 Ford pickup I had just got the signal stat on the column and was about to run to town to get a flasher. I remembered my daughter was close to an O’Riellys and sent her a simple text to show the counter person what I wanted. “A heavy duty 3 prong flasher”.

She came back and I asked what I owed her, “18 and change”. Huh? I looked in the bag and had a solid state flasher for something new.
I took it back, talked to the guy that sold it to her and asked “ why did you give her this, I asked for a 3 prong HD flasher”?
He said “Well, that’s the most popular one we sell”.
What kinda got me was the fella was about my age, maybe he was in the middle of a career change or something, I dunno.
Napa sells me what I want as does AutoZone. We used to have a Kragen (O’Riellys took them over) but there was a lady there that knew her stuff. You could ask for a Chevy solenoid, she’d go get one, no looking on the computer and going through a series of questions. I understand why they have to though.

  11. I’m not sure I would want my teenager serving a bunch of grouchy old know it alls for a career, that would make for a long day. If I get reasonable service, I generally thank them, retail is a tough gig in my experience. Oh and if I have a computer issue, who do we call- a teenager will generally get you back in shape. No one can know everything.

What a joke ! all the mighty car guys on here . Instead of considering helping the young person out who probably does not know a thing about cars you come on here and run them in the dirt for having a minimum wage job putting up with **** from waiting on all the ***holes that come through the door.

Chrome polish and a number of products like that are low volume sellers that use up space.

Many don’t want to be taught and many really don’t even care about their job. Sounds virtuous to take a side but the problem is a bit more nuanced IMO.
There is nothing really disturbing or offensive about the reactions to these experiences. I have had them as well.
I tried to find a voltage regulator for an old airplane project. It had used an old Ford part. Went to three stores, tried calling it a tractor part, a ‘67 Fairlane part, etc. but could never get the parts guys to find it. When you tell them what it’s for or even ID the part for them and they still won’t agree it’s what you want, that’s a different problem than education.
A friend asked for a simple part for a Chevelle and the counter kid reached for the keyboard and asked, “Who makes that?”
My only re****al would be that these parts guys, older and young, are likely inundated with customers who have never changed a tire so the computer answers are the quickest path to silence.

Just the stop *****ing would be plenty....

I actually call 'shenanigans' on the battery story. I've never in my life told a parts guy what make or model I'm buying a battery for. I just grab a battery off the rack, or tell the guy what I want battery wise, and pay for it....

These threads crack me up. We should have a new header like the antiquated called "general whining". It would fill up with posts fast! Lmfao.... We could do this, then an electronic ignition/pertronix dizzy thread, etc etc...

Great advice, I can get my wife to find anything on line. She is my tech guru.
I still have lots to learn.
So to those who put down this exchange of dialogue remember you can't hear the tone of voice.
    It's not always a *****: Just I can't believe this happened.
When the journey began, counter guys often were ex-mechanics whose busted hands and backs led then to inside work.
I would marvel at them explaining to me the things to watch for when handing me a certain part.

Like this QUOTE,,, My take has always been talk is cheap so keep talking.
Don't like the program? Change the channel:)
BTW I usually keep two bottles ( remember when they were cans? ) of Turtle chrome on hand because I can only find one at a time....:p

If your goal was to annoy the teenager behind the counter so you could go online and complain about kids these days you might.

even though complaining on the internet to a bunch of people that can't do any thing about it seems traditional, this is no place for it.....
