got some old radar wheels had some rust on the outter steel part of rim. What do you guys think of the chrome powdercoating. I seen it on internet but not in person. Do you think this would be ideal for my wheels. Another words, Does it look like chrome. I do think it would be more ideal for kansas weather and salty roads around here in winter.
I have lots of "chrome powder coat" things on my various projects.....its not like real chrome, its like dull chrome but its very durable.....I have seen "chrome" stock car wheels from Aero that are very "chromie", much brighter than the stuff I get from my local powdercoater, very much like real chrome and they are apparently powdercoated so ask to see some samples before you commit.....D I'll try to dig up some pics of the stuff I have
The chrome powder that I have used is two stage. It looks great after the first bake, but the UV protection in the clear kills it. It comes out looking more like the ceramic coating on headers. Unfortunately, if you don't clear it you still have the same look after light gets to it for a while. These are the only pics I have of parts after the clear...
The "chrome" can be cleared and that does help, but I personally haven't seen anything yet that looks like true chrome.
There are powdercoats that have a nice shine to them but next to chrome they fail to give the same shine. Going with the Chrome powdercoat should be much cheaper though. As "bumpnrun" stated make sure you get some samples to make sure you will like it. Many a differance in shine between shops due to process or the powder itself.
chrome powder requires a clear coat to make it weather durable, that knocks the shine down to a polished aluminum look, no where near the equal to real chrome
^^^ X2 In 2 words "It Sucks" it does however look awesome with a semi gloss clear on it (here's a comparison of gloss/semi gloss clear)
The closest to chrome with out chroming is metalizing. It starts with laying down a powdercoat primer then a chrome like metalizing then a powder clear. But it is still not chrome if you get right up on it...but you can see yourself in it
Here's some bonded chrome parts that I did. This is as close as you can get to chrome in powder coat at the moment. Looks like polished aluminum. Here's some stuff that I did with a stock 235 motor.
Thanks guys! the only down fall of the chrome powder that its the least durable out of all the powders
Sonicweb - good looking 235. I have some real chrome bits on mine, but I think I like the look of yours better. Well done!
Scrap, who's powder is that and what time/temp did you use? It looks as good as the two stage before clear.
it sucks i have seen tons of chrome powder coat that just falls off...the few coating shops ive delt with refuse to do it...salt well eat it stay away
might think about using a powder that replicates black chrome. Maybe High Plains Drifter can suggest something.
Whenever I hear anything is powder coated, I stay away from it. I've had too many things that it just peeled off from. You get one nick and moisture gets under it and the metal rusts, pushing the powder coat off. I have a Western snowplow that has nice shiny powder coat just bulging with rust underneath. Wheels that are 2 years old and don't have anything but rust left.
