Anyone remove chrome with muriatic acid or other ways? Looking for methods you’ve used… Thanks!

I've sanded it for paint. Chrome shop can remove it completely. Acids that will dissolve it will also dissolve the base metal.

  3. What's the base metal? The best way is to have a chrome shop strip it, but that won't be cheap. Different base metals use different processes, and depending on what you want to do after it's stripped can affect your prep.

I learned a bit back after making a few calls, the chrome ships can strip? The chrome off, but only a few can get the nickel off to bare metal, so make sure you ask if you’re going that far.

I use the Scotch-Brite pads that you use on the 4” grinders to take the chrome off of whatever I need. I use the brown pads and it doesn’t***** the base metal so if you wanted to paint it you can. Chrome shops will break the bank if they do the stripping because they have to pay a waste water fee and someone to haul off the stuff because of environmental laws. That’s why it cost so much to chrome things now along with the price of metals going through the roof

what are you trying to achieve ? are you going to paint the parts or re chrome them. ? About 10 years ago a buddy of mine had me bring a bunch of his chrome motorcycle parts to work and have them powder coated black (not my taste, but his bike) we did zero prep and the paint is still holding on after all these years with no issues. when I was getting things re plated I had the chrome shop strip them for me

If it's just a matter of stripping the chrome I don't know if it would be all that expensive having it done by a chrome shop. In the process of getting stuff rechromed, all the labor is in the prep work, the stripping part only requires dipping the parts in the tank for a while and then rinsing them off. It may be worth a phone call if you have a chrome shop nearby.

I collect coins and last year I purchased a small box of****orted coins. In the box was belt buckle with a chromed silver dollar on it and the silver dollar was worth more than what I paid for the box. I immersed the buckle in a jar with muriatic acid and after a week the silver dollar was chrome free and in perfect condition.

One of my buddies said that he had the local machine shop bake the chrome off some wheels in their engine block bake oven but I never saw the results right after he got them back.
