No chrome, well that leaves building early traditional cars (where everything was painted) or go build 80's styled pro street cars with all the trim painted to match

Like everything else, when the EPA clamps down on US businesses to the point that costs surpass the cost of shipping out of the country, that's what will happen. Actually, it's already going on, bull bore, on new manufacturing that requires electroplating.

The really stupid thing is, all the greenie wienie tree huggers demand all the regulations on US turf, but sending it to a country that has no regulations is actually increasing emissions on the global scale dramatically. So, although they are actually responsible for making things worse, it's OK with them, as long as they don't see it in their own backyard.

I didn't have to give it up, cuz I don't have to pay for it;)
My point was that sometimes sacrifices are necessary to get a job done and in the case of chroming, just about anything you might have to sacrifice for is worth it....in my world in my world of course. For me, I sacrifice my spare time for extra money. Someone who has a family at home might not be willing to give up their evenings with the family.

  9. I am going to try the spectra chrome process on some interior parts on my 54. From what I have seen it looks pretty damn good. I can get my 55 Pontiac rear bumpers and 58 T-bird Bumper/grill done for 400.00. I was got a price of double that to do the T-bird bumper

In '59 I had everything inside of my '38 coupe chromed. Complete dash, window frames, steering column, e-brake, pedals, shifter, even the seat hinges for $100 bucks. That was a lot then from washing dishes for $1.25 an hour. I wish I had that car now and that Chrome. I hope one of you has it! t was done in a little backyard shop in Pittsburg Cal. The guy did good work.

No worries folks! The outlaw hoodlum spirit will prevail over the tyranny of the MAN.

Meth labs, pot farms and crack houses survive and prosper because of the DIY attitude and the need for a fix! So likewise chrome labs will rise in condemned trailers and foreclosed houses across S.E. Texas and abroad providing you with your chrome fix!

You gotta admit - its kinda funny. We (myself included) bitch about off shore, non-American parts. Then when the price of poker goes up, we all want to jump to TJ.

A life-long 40+ year plater got out of doing decorative/car chrome and explained to me, that one major hazard was the Hexavalent chrome powder, used to charge the baths. "Extemely toxic", were his words. (1 ppm, for example)

So if it goes offshore, Rashy is right, to ask how can we solve the problem? If the powder left the plant thru an exhaust ventilator, I don't think you'd want your kids breathing it. Tree huggers? It sounds a bit more complicated from what he told me.

...and another reason to send stuff offshore and further degrade our own economy by paying cheap labor in an unregulated country for sub-par craftsmanship in our disposable society...tree-huggers might be a stretch, but there are ways of safely dealing with caustic chemicals...

    Rashy and RoyalShifters:

Check out www.caswellplating.com. They have DIY show chrome kits (three part, copper, nickel, and chrome). I've thought about getting two of them and then just making my own bin large enough for bumpers out of two Rubbermaid containers and a plastic welder. The solutions just need to be deep enough to cover the parts. It might be cheaper in the long run if you have multiple pieces to do.

    Can't have it all.
In our so-called regulated world, good conscience about a clean and safe environment for the future comes with a big price tag.
If it will be a better, cleaner and healthier future seems more about hope, than anything else.

I always had old aged chrome, scratches and all, on my drivers.
Personally I prefer old cars with original character, unless it looks neglected and hurts to look at every day.
But then again, I grew up with buildings and art that was centuries and millennia old.

Preservation and conservation is an approach that keeps telling stories.
Making or rebuilding from scratch is about something entirely different and has a high price nowadays, compared to modern mass-production.

I've used it with less than sterling results. It left a dull finish and so I used the clear as instructed and it brightned it up a little. It doesn't shine, has the look of pewter.

Just grind it down to bare metal (36 grit preferred) and clear coat it!

I was quoted 1,100.00 for a re-chroming my Econoline front and rear bumpers. It seems like a LOT of money till you look at the LABOR involved. Grinding , straightening, and plating 4 times - copper, nickel chrome. Thats a helluva lot of work. Just be sure you have a good shop doing the work.
Bottom line is it is really the crowning touch to a nice rebuild. You'll forget how much it cost in a couple months..

One thing that will make it affordable is if you polish the part before it has to be chromed. We had a duvall style windshield done here close to home for $100. I was expecting $400-600 and like jump for joy when he said the price. I know everyone won't give that price but the work put into polishing it takes a while and saves them alot of time. If it has chrome that has to be removed let them remove the chrome then fix pits and polish yourself to save money. It took a day or two to polish the windshield for chrome but that was on our time not theirs.
