CG, you got it! BTW, I haven't done one yet but I hear they can be a real PITA.
Anything you can do the get crud out first, then pull/pry from the FAR END so you don't break it off a 2 inch section at a time will be in your best interests. Flush until there is no more junk, then reach into the jackets and s****e some more and reflush! The little hook they show will probably only work with a clean block and a new tube. There is no reason to remove it in that case!
Collapsing it sideways tends to make it taller, jamming it in. Same with squishing it down. Better to split it.

As stated before, white vineager will do a good job and cheap. Just be sure to flush the system before and after.

  3. call vintage power wagons in iowa. they have a tool to pull the water tube. the tube is like a oval shape. by the water pump it is big it then tapers down to the back. there are slots cut on the top to bring water to the head.what happens is as the tube tapers the slots get smaller.**** plugs the rear slots over heating occures.i have been through this.should cost about 100 bucks with the tool to remove the old one.

  4. Heed the words of RODSTRACE for he knows what he's talking about. All his advice is bang on the mark. If you're trying to remove a cruddy old distribution tube, you need to have the head off so you can apply some leverage to the back of the tube as well as trying to get it from the front. Andy Bernbaum has them for a reasonable price, also any other parts you will need. Also, the forum at the p15-d24 site has all the flathead Mopar info you will ever need.
Props to you for keeping the flattie. They're a very good engine.

Don't forget to have the radiator checked.
Most radiator shops can flow check the
radiator to see if it's flowing properly.
If it's plugged too badly it will overheat
no matter what else you do to engine.
