    Hello!

A local guy just bought a 59 Imperial, he said it drives well - he just has a problem with the transmission. I haven't even seen the car, but I thought maybe one of you push-button experts knows this problem:

He cannot change from drive to reverse, he hast to turn off ignition to change to reverse ??

Sounds familiar to anybody, any hint for the guy???

    thank you & best regards,
    Max

Hmm...I don't think there's any kind of electrical safety switch for the pushbuttons other than the neutral safety switch, and that just cuts the ground to the starter solenoid or something.

Does it just not let him push the button in? Or does it work if he shifts from drive to neutral and then reverse? (I don't think you should have to, but I've never driven a pushbutton car)

    thanx for the reply!

no, he also tried with neutral - it only works after he turned of ignition...

what I unterstood he can push the button, it just doesn't shift.

57 has a cast iron torque-flite. the push button is simply a cable shift. should make no difference if its running or not [IMG]

In my opinion it sounds like a valve is hanging up in the valve body . As you put it in drive and with the fluid pressure and the hang up the cable doesn't have the strenght to overcome ,when you shut off the engine the pressure would drop and the cable could make it shift.

There is also a possibility that the park lever (if it has one) could be hanging and not let it move the cable. I believe the park lever is supposed to kick it out of gear when it is moved.

Hope this helps ,I haven't had one of those apart since the Clutch Flites were popular.Damn I'm old !!
