Projects Clark Coupe Build

I am using a Tanks U3 16 gal tank in the trunk. I liked the low cost and practical approach 51box used on his 28 coupe project using a modified Airtex E8269h pump assembly which is for a late 80's Accord and Prelude. Its low cost and easy to find. 51box has over 3600 miles on his build with this pump set up and he told me it has worked well so I thought I would give it a try. See post 263 of his build thread for his version of the modifications. I took a slightly different approach and tried to reuse even more of the original parts. This is what you start with.

You will have to straighten the arm and remove and reweld the bracket that holds on the pump motor. The metal tube will need to be bent some and I did have to remove some of the rubber material around the motor to make it a little smaller in diameter to fit though the tank hole. You will also have to modify the top flange making it smaller to match the tank. I also added a vent outlet.


It now fits the tank perfectly and has the correct depth. Besides the pump assembly all I needed was one hose clamp and the vent fitting.

I found out I will have to wait another month before the shop can take my motor so decided to go ahead and mount the body on the frame for now to give me more space in the garage and some more items to work on.

I thought I was done with the rust repair but chased some pin holes on the trunk lid.

Slowly but surely I am knocking out the rest of the paint work. I just don't want to store finished paint items that I am not ready to install yet as I don't have the space to safely store them. Only big items left are the doors and grill shell. Just finished spraying the trunk and cowl top.

I have been working on rebuilding my gauge cluster off an on the last two months. I am using a 1951 Plymouth cluster and wanted to update it using mid 80's Camaro volt, temp, oil, and fuel gauges. Fitting the replacement gauges was not to hard but I had been stuck on making new gauge faces. Here is what I started with.



My artsy daughter recently puchased a Cricut machine which looks like a computer printer but has a knife and cuts fairly intricate designs in paper and vinyl. I figured she could cut me vinyl stickers that I could use as stencils. The early attempts with painting the dial faces using the stencils did not turn out as well as I wanted. I ended up getting the best results by using the vinyl stencils on black anodized aluminum and bead blasting.


Here is what I ended up with.

looks like you have the market cornered on 51 Ply instrument clusters That turned out really nice, great job.

 

You don't know what you don't know. I was working on getting my visor and the header metal that is under the visor installed and figured out that my new wood header was too tall in the front and needed to be tappered down in the front. Fortunately I had not nailed any of the metal in place was able to remove the header with out a lot of work.

Looks REAL GOOD bet nobody will know the difference

 

I had to cheat a little bit. The voltage gauge should read 8 to 18 but we could not get the Cricut to cleanly cut the small 8s without moving the small inner circles out of place.

Dash done and all wired up.
I had to come up with a filler panel for the middle of the dash. I ended up making one from a piece of ribbed aluminum cut out of a old piece of a shower door header.

What type of bead did you blast this with this? We have a Cricut as well and I am always looking for new ideas. Yours turned out really nice and crisp.

 

That wiring looks fantastic and that cluster is bitchin'! Great work!

 

Here are the glass beads I used. I tried the aluminium oxide that was in the blast cabinet first and it ended up leaving a dust under the tape edges that scratched the finish.

Some more progress this week. Got the trunk lid color sanded and installed.

I don't plan on doing the interior until I can drive the car for awhile and get any bugs worked out but wanted to at least cover the seat.

The famous Dodge Caravan middle seat before.

Same seat with a $15 vintage GM rear seat cover installed.

$15 on eBay. It included only the back seat cover.
