I waited to hear from a guy that accepted 2 grand from me and didn't respond to PM's, e mails, OR phone calls for 3 weeks. I had to accept the fact that the ball was on his side of the court, and there was either a valid reason, or I was major league screwed. Thankfully it worked out-( 17 hour drive, but at one point it seemed like a viable idea - I even made a rifle scabbard for my walker). ( 10 bucks takes it)
K-13 I am going to continue to keep it respectful. Your entitled to your opinion. Like anyone else I would simply apologize to the person if there were mitigating circumstances, but that is not what I was talking about. My rant was about the culmination of a multitude of times that this type of thing has happened. MULTIPLE times, not just this person at this time! Read the thread.
Gordon I don't like it either, I think it's a sign of the times though, if people can tell you something to your face (lie), then this whole internet/social media oriented society finds it even easier to do it from behind a keyboard. When I stopped packing parts to the swap meets I decided to try C/L, boy is that a wasteland of lowlifes. I made a pact to NEVER have people come to my location, but would have them meet me at a nearby gas station (well monitored), this worked reasonably well but I can count on both hands the times I had no-shows after agreeing to meet.
Mine's listed, but I understand why some aren't-for the same reason I don't post pictures of my cars at their garages: Google Earth. If everyone on this site was fair and honest-fine, but too much information on the location of valuable cars makes it too easy to locate and "liberate" them. Security is one reason not to give your location away.
So all "anyone'' needs to do is ask the seller a question of where are you located and that ''anyone'' can then know..........thats if you get a reply from the seller. JW
DDDenny I think what you say is true. I also have found on many occasions that the craigslist folks don't give a rats ass for your time or effort. I have the same thing with folks not showing up and not even the courtesy of a sorry I can't make it call or text. Nothing at all! I had one guy who called me 4 times over the course of 6 months for a transmission I had for sale, an S10 5 speed for $75. He tried his best to get me to drop the price. In the end I just told him I scrapped it to stop the nonsense!
lots of times the ads are scams is why they don't respond. another is that someone else that is IT savy placed the ad and isn't monitoring it, had that happen or better yet still have a land line and no cell then are never home. responding to really old ads have paid off for me finding other parts. Google has led me to lots of old ads here so.....?
I've tried to buy quite a few cars from here and had no responses, seems to be the norm Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I haven't read the entire thread, so somebody probably covered this, But what about the potential buyers that don't read the entire ad, and don't follow basic directions? For instance "DON'T MESSAGE OR E-MAIL ME DIRECTLY, PLEASE CALL AT THIS PHONE NUMBER"! Drives me f'n NUTS! I rarely use my e-mail these days. Long distance is free with every cell plan ever conceived. If i ask potential buyers to call me, why, two weeks later do I have an e-mail screaming at me that I should have answered them first? Seriously, how long does it take to read the entire ad and follow directions?
GordanC. I have told people that with parts and cars people that have tried to REALLY low ball me on or scammers. Bruce.
need louvers - Good point which I don't think had been brought up yet. I try to make sure to follow the instructions in an ad but may have missed something a time or two.
That's how I got a quarter panel for my '27 roadster, found it for sale on a two year old ad that came up in a search. As for responding in a decent amount of time - I sold a small NOS electrical part, turns out I got a detail in the description wrong when I listed it. Buyer receives it, discovers the error and gets all wound up. Ok, sorry, my bad, send it back and I'll refund the money. This was all the same day he received the part. The next morning I woke up to find three emails from him demanding clarification that the return shipping would be refunded too. We're talking under $7 here and he sent three emails between 8pm and 6am demanding a response. I refunded his money and told him to keep the thing. I would have paid return shipping but give me a freaking break, I have a life outside of selling obsolete parts to people who come apart at the seams over the possibility of a $7 loss. I thought about telling him I'd refund the money as soon as I saw a picture of the part smashed on the bench, but didn't...
People just see what they want to see, then ask you questions which you have already described in the ad. I advertise on Gumtree here, which is similar to C.L., it is the home of the dumb-arse. I put in the ad "I do not monitor emails, so just call my number" This is only a land line, as I dont have a mobile (cell) phone. That confuses the hell out of some, as they have probably never rung an actual telephone, and think the number is wrong. It also stops the messages from supposed ex-armed forces scammers living on oil rigs. When I do check emails, I will see many replies for an item I have for sale, for. , say $150. The only thing written is "$30?", nothing else in the email. I always ignore these bozos, or if I am in a good mood, I send a reply- " H.G.S.S?" (How's "Get Stuffed" sound"?). Funny, I never get a reply.
Agree with the time element for obsoleting an ad. Another thought for the ads for cars or items that have SOLD; and of course this depends on the seller being diligent and editing the title to say SOLD. Once that word appears in the title, the software that this site uses would recognize that word and auto-delete the ad within say an hour. That way, even tho' it got bumped, it would go away in a short time
I can't believe this is still going!! I just want the sold stuff gone if I look at everything then I will buy stuff I don't need or have the coin for.
Craigslist is a magnet for that shit. I have had people write me extensive, detailed messages about how why what I am asking for something is too much, as if that is some way to bargain, and then get pissed when I tell them that I am not interested in making a deal. I was selling a 4x4 that I had, heavily modified, in fair shape, for $5000. One guy told me in about 750 words why it was only worth $1000, $1500 max. I sold it for $4800. A dinner for a clutch job, including half-shafts. A derelict motor home for a Jeep, when the ad says no trades, I have too many vehicles. Bitcoin for parts. The list goes on and on....
I was selling a small new electric heater on C/L for a friend, IIRC it was like 15-20 bucks. Get a call from this crackhead sounding beotch, said she'd buy it if I delivered it.............. 30 miles, right.
Personally I've has great luck with HAMB ads and the people involved, maybe not owning a cell phone is the reason. Bob
bet on black, I had 1 guy offer me goats for trade on a car on Craigs list.Damn some people, you just got to laugh. LOL. Bruce.
DDDenny.Yea I love it when people what you to drive your car for sale an hour away just so they can look at it. Like I said before, you just got to laugh. Bruce.
The37Kid.I never had a problem with H.A.M.B. posts with stuff of sale either. A much better brand of people here.Bruce.
I just received hell in an email because the delivery of the part, via FEDEX, took one day longer. The Memphis hub had shut down overnight, due to the snowfall. Guess I should have been there, shoveling the shipping docks.
When I was in my early 20's, one month I was totally broke, didn't have rent money, so I tried to sell my Eldorado in the local Want Ads. A guy wanted to buy it, but wanted a test drive 1st. He met me at my apartment building, had me drive to downtown Boston. He was really happy with the car. (I needed the money, and was psyched!) All of the sudden he told me to pull over, blurted out that he changed his mind, jumped out and went into a building there. He conned me into giving him a free taxi ride. I was as dumbfounded as when a friend and I skipped high school one day, then drove to the big city to get fake ID's. We waited 1/2 hour outside of a hotel while a drug dealer we met on the street went upstairs with our driver's licenses, and 100 of our dollars. When we went in we saw there was an exit onto the next street on the other side of the lobby. I guess I was a dumb kid. In fact I grew up to be a dumb man, oh well.....
