I have a set of cool hubcaps that have some surface rust. What's the best way to clean them up? I was going to hit them with 000 steelwool but thought it might scratch the finish. BTW: Are hubcaps aluminum or stainless steel???
most are stainless steel, and i use mothers aluminum polish and a rag or you can use oooo steel wool and the polish and wipe off with a good cotton rag, thats how ive cleaned all of mine, hope that helps some, good luck bro!
I like to clean rust off of chrome with buffing compound, same stuff you'd use to buff out your paint. As mentioned, if they're rusty, they're most likely chrome plated steel, unless some grinding dust or something got stuck on the stainless to cause the rust. Aluminum hubcaps are very rare.
fast orange cuts through varnish pretty quick and smells dreamy. i use bush 's aluminum polish for final buffing. it works good on chrome, stainless, paint, whatever.
This may sound totally 'out there'... but it works. (I don't know why it works, but it does) To remove the rust stains from chrome: Get some of that foil found in cigarette packs... spit on the rust stain (works better than tap water)... and rub with the foil. You don't need to scrub. this isn't a sanding process, it's more of a chemical / electrical thing. Give it a try.
tazzeller, where in the heck did you find out that process,I had a little rust spots on some baby moon caps, tried that shit right quick and damn it worked.Don"t let the tobacco people get wind of this ,they"ll charge me more for my Marlboros.
found a guy on you tube using Noxon on chrome & stainless it's a seven metal polish http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1418968&CAWELAID=344455210 had good luck with it
i use ketchup and tin foil on my rusty caps. It cleans them up real good for a few months or until it rains real bad. I think the acid in the ketchup does something to the rust and the tin foil fills in the little pits, does the trick until i can afford to get a new set! -Ryan
