cleaning paint gun with Acetone.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by VisionInvisible, Aug 9, 2010.

  1. I use Acetone that I get from my local HomeDepot store to clean my painting gun after I am done painting. It is a a HVLP type of gun.

    Is this good/bad?

I have used acetone from Lowe's as a cleanup solvent for years. I keep it off of plastic parts and only use it on metal. Plastic parts get lacquer thinner, even if they are tolerant of acetone. Just my own rule of thumb.

Same here, just be real careful about disposal and storing it, I usually burn it off in a fire pit, gun cleaner spray is acetone based. If there is a negative please let us know.

    Hey,

Given that acetone is a main solvent in most lacquer thinners, it should be no problem. As with any solvent, avoid contact with skin, lungs, painted surfaces and plastic.

i do iron work and paint most of it flat black, i fill my gun with paint and use it as i need it, sometimes it in there for a week or more, i stick a foam ear plug in the vent hole to keep it from going hard, when i do clean my gun i use paint stripper from a spray can, this is a pretty extream case i know, makes my gun look like new.
