So I disassembled my 1964 Olds Eaton posi unit for inspection and cleaning and a possible rebuild. Turns out it is all like new and just needs to be reassembled, save for a few wear items. However, I'm unsure of what to clean the posi clutches with. Solvent can't possibly be a good idea, so what should I use?

Thanks Rick. I wasn't sure about brake cleaner, but if it works for brakes, it should work for these.

no bother the only diff i worked on had metal plates , i replaced them with uprated metal plates , new bearings, n shims ,still to test it ,but its smooth now.breather on case missing the top and allowed a little mist out and a little water in. oil low when i drained it .i washed stuff with white spirits and a clean cotton cloth.not supposed to leave any residue.

Why would you clean them? They go back together and get soaked in oil almost instantly! I just rebuilt two units, basically just new ring and pinions[gear ratio changes]!! ROY.

leave them alone, wipe off the oil and dirt with a lint free rag, spread some fresh oil on them, and put back together.

  9. I've squirted them in the past with brake kleen so I could have a good look at them.

Thanks for the responses guys. The only reason I want to clean them is because the unit has been sitting out collecting dust for awhile now. Not to mention that I'm sure that while they are out, they are going to collect some sort of foreign material that I don't want to be there when they go back in.
