Is it okay to use a clear coat over enamel, given enough time for the paint to completely dry? Would seem to me to give it a little extra protection in addition to a nice shine. Thanks!
If the acrylic enamel was catalyzed , yes , I did it to my T 15 years ago & it's held up well..... dupont V7500s over martin-senour catalyzed acrylic enamel.. dave I wet sanded the AE with 1500 grit before I shot the clear 40K miles w/no fenders & I've got maybe 3 small stone chips..
I found the colored enamel needs to be dry, very dry, and hard. Minimum of 2 weeks, more is even better for your color to dry out then you can clear over it. When I ran into problems, the air was cold, I was allowing less than a week drying time, and the clear acted like paint remover It took me 3 attempts to get it right last fall, 2 times tooo many.
i put 2 coats of acrylic enamel then sprayed the clear over it for the 3rd and4th coat has held up for the past 17 yrs
I did it on a OT Maverick I had. Bought the paint from www.paintforcars.com, used their clear coat enamel over their acrylic enamel. Worked great, sprayed the clear about 1 week after the color. Might have just been dumb luck, but car looked great 3 years later when I got rid of it.
