Just thought you might be interested in seeing what a sand blasted surface would look like with clear powder coating over it. I think it looks really cool, almost cast iron grey. That's bare sand blasting next to it.
They say because of the blasting there was plenty for the powder to "bite" and shouldn't have a problem. Yes Larry, frame.
...man, this is givin' me ideas out the wazzoo for axles and such, but what about rock chips? How do you touch it up?
looks nice, i just sprayed high temp clear out ofa rattle can and i get a similar effect. Looks awsome dont it?! Look in my profile and i think you can see my intake was sandblasted alum and sprayed clear high temp.
That's a nice looking finish and yes, it does last. One of our jr dragsters was powdercoated clear over the sandblasted metal and it has looked and held up great for over 5 years. Hank
Hmm, I believe at one time I was told you could spot powder coat.....I don't know how "true" that is, or what the final result would be..... maybe you could just dab some clear paint in the chips?? wet sand and polish?? And yeah, I've wondered about some other parts too! Jefe54, that looks nice.
WOW! How hard was it to get the surface finish (color)uniform? The clear would let every spot and shadow show. Did the PC'er do it or you guys? As usual, another outstanding job!
I pretty much looked over the sand blaster and pointed to the spots that needed touching up. I went back the next day (sandblasting didn't take more than an hour, but it was late in the day) and taped off the frame, that took 4 hours!!. Snow started falling as we were taking the frame from the sandblasting area (outside) into the building, that was scary...It ended well though, and I am very happy with the results(sp)... We'll see what happens after paint! Take Care and if I don't hear from you or see you until then, happy Christmas. Matt
I like that too. Got a good look to it. I wonder if you could clear powdercoat over patina? Sounds good on paper, but probably a disaster on the real thing. Nevermind.
That looks nice, I love the color. Another great way to show off your metal work and fabrirication skills.
Just be careful doing it over steel. I have seen extremely clean steel rust under clear powder coat in less than a year. Not sure of any way to keep it from happening. It wasn't sandblasted first though, but it was polished to a high shine.
Did the coaters wash it first? They typically wash the parts before coating with a phospheric(sp) acid based liquid that will promote rusting. I'm not sure exactly why they do that. The ch***is went directly from blasting to coating without the wash.
I have valve covers and a valley pan done this way and it is great for making them easy to clean. They do not always use acids on parts. Sometimes a bath in good old simple green is enough (if they are new parts) then they will gas them (stick them in the oven for a few minutes). This draws the any oils and impurities out of the metal. Fitysix
