Clearance (kingpin bushings)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 29RAT, Sep 26, 2005.

  1. Anybody know what the proper clearance for the kingpins should be when reaming new bushings 37 - 41 ?

  2. Well I reamed em out to .001 over and they work awesome. Did it with some little fixture bushings and a standard chucking reamer. I just don't like the imprecise nature of adjustable reamers, comes from my days as a tool maker. Anyway one shot through each bushing and the pins fell in with only .001 clearance.

I've always reamed the bushings so the pins will just push in with a little thumb pressure, or as my old German machinist told me when I was an apprentice long ago, "Loose, mit no shake".

The only difinitive writeup I ever saw on king pins, said to ream the bushings until the pins just fit in and it takes 5 lb/ft pressure to move the spindle, when pulling from the area of the cotter pin.

  5. You will get a better fit and finish by having your local shop guy hone them on his Sunnen con rod machine. Infinitely adjustable, does both bushings simultaneously, and gives a nice bore finish. Fit is described as a "palm press"
