Ive seen a lot of hot rod fads come n go but this latestgets my goat.A guy trying to sell a 60 Impala with the originalsurface rust and patina clearcoated! How does the clear adhere to the surface rust!,Ive been around the auto body field for a few years and dont think clear would adhere without a surface tooth like 320 400 grit. The things people try to p*** off amazes me!

You are correct. Most of that clear will start to peel and it will really look like sheet. Nothing but a hack job.

It's been "common" for years - and I've seen some clear coated bare metal cars (no corser than 1000 grit) last without much new surface rust for several years. What gets me is using super glossy clear over patina or bare metal.

Gas Monkey satin-clearcoated an original patina car last season or so. All the cool kids are doing it.

I'd love to see what happens when a hack sprays a bare metal car with water-based clear coat though...

Best thing to do is buy everything that pisses you off so you can fix it "right". Then you can insure that people only get what you know is best for them.

    Waste of HAMB bandwidth.

So, if it's clear-coated, does that mean you can wax your rust?

rust and patina are two different things.

A few people today were talking about a cars soul and how changing the car can take that soul away. clearing old paint with a flat clear is a way of preserving that soul and allowing it to stay frozen in that state for longer.

I do agree this clearing over a rusted out piece of junk phase is played out.

I dont understand. why even clear it? just leave it alone if you like the patina? or will it get too much patina?

You can always tell when there is too much patina. Holes start appearing in the metal and people change from calling it patina to calling it rust. I'm from the "tradional" time period when it was just called rust.

    Simply because they want to.

Jesus Christ- none of us HAS to have a old car or truck. None of us HAS to have a hot rod. None of us HAS to have anything but a god damned factory stock vehicle to commute with and to work out of.

So what the **** difference does it make if someone clears rust? Quit whining like little ***ty babies & go outside & build something. I can not believe that so many people here just do not get what this hobby is about. Stupid.

OK, that does it. Any car I have in the future has patina, not rust. Need to cut some 'patina' off of my old frame this weekend in fact.

Oh and for the guy above that is obviously somewhat frustrated. Geez, chill out. If a forum thread gets you this mad I hope to God you aren't an air traffic controller or traffic cop or something...it's all good... have a beer

Patina for sale, patina for sale. Just come over with a bucket and gather it from my driveway and you can have it for the low price of $29.95 per pound.

    Too funny!

Clear coating old paint and surface rust is bull **** but clear coating raw metal is the hottest fad going.

Aren’t they both forms of “patina”?

  30. Really? I have to explain it? OK. Patina is the NATURAL finish acquired over years. The second you apply clear coat it is no longer a natural finish. It may look like it, but it's not.

A virgin is someone that has never had ***. The first time they have ***, they are no longer a virgin. They may look like one, but they are not.

Clear coated "patina" is an oxy*****.

But really some of you guys take this a little too seriously. Do what you want. Most likely the owner or someone in the future will eventually strip the car and paint it, once the clear fails.

Now I can't wait for the "How do I remove the chalked out, peeling clear, without damaging my patina" thread!!;)
