Clevor - 351W block, Cleveland heads

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by pcmenten, Jun 6, 2012.

  1. While I agree with the 350, 400, S-10, Ls-1 ********, the first Mustang did indeed come out in '64, but a '70 Mustang didn't, a 351 Windsor engine didn't, and a Cleveland damn sure didn't. With all that aside, these Clevor engines are no joke, nasty ****ers.

Get on the CHI website, they are an Australian company that does a ton of that kind of stuff, also check out Jon Kaase Racing. I had a 408" Clevor, Dart block, Chi heads, BDS 6-71 made an easy 697 horse on the dyno....wicked fast. got my heads from Kaase along with the water neck and crossover coolant lines.step up to an MSD distributor , makes things easier as far a sadjusting timing curve....good luck

Back in the 70s, you really had to fumble your way through these builds. We put 289 heads on a Windsor block to increase compression. A builder that I know offset ground a Windsor crank to stroke it and used 348 chevy rods and 350 chevy pro stock pistons to build a real dirt track screamer.

    Wow, 348 rods. That's a new one.

I got my stroker crank for pretty cheap. I actually have a crank kit for a 351w to put into the 351w block that I had, but I couldn't find reasonably priced pistons with Cleveland valve notches to fit the 351w. I realized that I still have some +.030 used Cleveland pistons, and they would work perfectly with the 3.85" stroker crank and W rods, so that was a no-brainer - stock W rods, stock C pistons, stroker crank.

For rockers, I ordered some Crane long-slot stamped steel sled-fulcrum replacements. Because of the odd pushrod angles and stories I've heard about ticking Cleveland roller rockers, I opted for the factory designed rocker setup.

I'm going with a Comp retro-fit roller cam, but I might have to pay for a custom grind. I don't think a W grind is optimal for C heads. I don't think a C cam will fit a W block, so I'll have one of Comp's Extreme Energy cams for a Cleveland ground onto a W cam blank.

Did I mention that I have an Aus 302 block, heads and intake? I'm not sure what I'll do with those parts. Another stroker with a roller cam, for sure, but I don't know what ch***is. Maybe a 55 Vicky.

I have been looking for one of those 400s for a couple years,I want to put one in my 65 custom 500 to retain my small block manual trans bellhousing,I think they also use the small block mounts too.

Did you use stock rockers in your 302 Boss? And what block did you use?
