Clutch Disc help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Beep, Sep 21, 2009.

  1. OK guys, I need some good ole HAMBone help here :). I have a sort of uniques situation I need some help on .

The GizzleHopper of old ran a Scheiffer 11" Double Disc "Velvatouch"clutch set up. Of course these are now non-existent as is Scheiffer itself. In the old days, a "real" clutch did not slip. We did not want it to slip, that's why we rab double and triple disc clutches. We slipped the tires instead.

Out of necessity, the GizzleHopper of today runs a single disc clutch. A good strong one, but still a single disc and she will not hold when the car tries to hook up when doing a burn out. It begins to slip.

The answer to my delima is to simply install a double disc clutch. Right?

Hmmm, not so easy it seems. Todays double, triple, quadruple disc set ups are made of sintered iron disc that are, of course, designed to slip, then hook up as heat is absorbed. You adjust the slippage by adding or subtracting weights form the clutch pressure plate to add or reduce heat. Great for todays racing. Bad for what I am looking for. I have talked to several of the good clutch companies. All say the same thing. Can't help.

Now, I have two issues here and this is where you HAMBones come in. I know at least one of you have done this or something like it before. LOL, maybe a few years ago, but you've done it.

    1) My spline is the small Ford 1 -1/16 -10 spline. Yes, I know, the large Ford 1 -3/8 -10 spline is the way to go, but that IS NOT what I have and I do not want to change out the entire drive line.

    2) I have in my possession two 11" sintered iron solid hub (no center springs) clutch disc. These disc have large Ford 1-3/8 -10 spline hubs. I need two things done to them.

    a) I need them re-hubbed to small Ford solid hub 1-1/16 - 10 spline
    b) I need the sintered iron facing removed and refaced with organic material

OK, there ya are..............who can do this?

Try Oklahoma Clutch Supply on Sheidan Ave in OKC. It has been a while, but they used to build velvetouch clutches for an odd combination I had.

I hate when somebody posts and doesn't answer the question asked. But here goes anyway...:)

Have you tried heating the sintered iron discs? I mean just holding the brake and slipping the clutch behind the line before making the run? For a while SI discs were the hot setup in Comp and the drivers did this to get it ready. In motorcycles we find that the pre run program radically changes the way SI discs work, more slip while heating the tire makes the clutch much more aggressive on the launch, often too aggressive.

Get them good and hot before you run and they might do exactly what you want.

  4. Hey H.G. Wells,

Thanks for the contact info. I called Oklahoma Clutch and they said hell yeah. If they can still get the velvatouch material, which they think they can, the will build me two disc at a reasonable price. They will let me know for sure tomorrow.

Again,,,thanks and damn I love this web site.
