Hey Gang: Looking for what clutch fork to use when using a pull type wilwood slave cylinder? I'm trying to see if I can fit an external slave cylinder - instead of the hydraulic throw-out that I have. (It would be easier to maintain.) I have a Sonic Chevy style bell housing and a diaphragm style clutch. Part Numbers? or Applications would sure help! Question: Since it is a 'pull' setup - how does the shaft mount/attach to the fork end? Most forks I've seen are 'pushers' - with just an indentation. Thanks!
I used a pull cylinder on my T. 283 with a T-5. I just used a common Chevy stamped arm. Think I got it from Speedway, So as to have a fresh pivot socket. I used a Wilwood 7/8 master and a Speedway pull slave because they had one that had a longer pull than the Wilwood slave. To mount the Slave to the arm I drilled the dimple (I think just slightly larger than 5/16) where you would normally push the throw out arm from. And used the supplied sort of 1/2 ball they had on the pull arm. The anchor end I put a 5/16 Heim and made a bracket that hangs off the side/rear of the trans and kinda gives the cylinder a straight pull. My bracket probably stand about 4 inches away from the trans, back where the tail bolts to the main case. I've seen it done tighter to the trans, but I liked having the straighter pull, and I had the room. This works very well. I also used a -4 line to connect up. Stainless wraped Teflon.
Cool! I'll just pickup a standard Chevy heavy duty one today and see if I can make it all fit . . . if not, then back to the Howe hydraulic throw-out. Thanks a bunch. Dale
Should you go back to a hydraulic throw-out bearing, since you have a Sonic bell - a 12003 I assume - why not use the Sonic hydraulic throw-out that is designed to bolt into the back of the bell - Sonic # 20015 for stock clutch?
Yeah, I originally ordered the Tilton throw-out - it does not have enough clearance in the combination I'm running, so I switched over to a Howe. The Howe setup is nicely engineered and should work, though I'd still prefer to have an external slave cylinder - to make service easy. Hell, I'd probably carry a spare slave cylinder in the trunk . . . just in case I blew a seal. Hope this makes sense . . .
Just reading out of interest. Just set up my Howe T/O tonight. It has taken me weeks to get all the planets aligned and it's finally all together. One thing I found frustrating was getting all the right bits to be able to bleed the clutch from outside the bell. You'd think they might come with a bulhead fitting or something. Anyhow, you're heading the other way so good luck to you. Pete
I just set up mine for a pull type cylinder. I used a corvette fork that has a 3/8" hole in it. I used a heim end on the cylinder to connect to the fork. Manufactured a bracket to attach the other end to the rear of the transmission.
I may not have the room for the external 'puller' slave cylinder - things are very tight in my frame. I'll let you all know!
I like the Novak push type slave. It's compact and fit close to the block. http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_hcr3.htm
