What do you guys do for a pilot bearing in the flywheel when mixing and matching different engines with other transmissions. I'm thinking of installing a slant 6 in a Willys truck using the original Willys 3 speed transmission. Does one make a bushing from something like oil lite for these proposes? John
John yes oil lite works great and wears well. You can get bar stock from motion Industries . It comes in all kinds of sizes including standards and may be able to find a stock application
First step would be to look up the Pilot bearing for that particular six and then look up the pilot bearing for that Jeep and see what the difference is. You can go bushing or you can go bearing and you should be able to hunt down a bearing with the correct ID/OD. From working on those slant sixes a lot more than I wanted to years ago you had better make sure you have plenty of room on the p***enger side (right hand if you are sitting in the drivers seat) because even in most stock Mopar cars it was a real tight fit to be able to work on the distributor or change plugs. The engines are about as bulletproof as any engine ever made but everything you need to work on except the carb is down under the valve cover in a tight spot in most rigs.
Thanks everyone. Yes I've heard that the slant six is problematic for working on because of the "slant" to the right. I figured for one thing I would use some type of electronic ignition to save the need of servicing the points. But the bulletproof idea is why I'd like to go with it.
