Technical Clutch...Which one do I choose?

The engine in my coupe is a '59 Ford Y block...the transmission WILL BE a T150 (Ford 3.03) 3 speed toploader with a Lay**** overdrive out of a '76 AMC Gremlin...

Do I look up the clutch specs on the Gremlin and find a similarly sized ford (diameter and spline count)? What about the pressure plate, throw out bearing, etc.? I'd like to get it all right the first time.

How would someone choose one that doesn't know the vehicle that the engine or trans came out of originally?

    Any recommendations on brands?

    Thanks.

  2. I’ve got one.
I test fit a ford disc I had and it worked.
the spline count and measurements will be listed when you look up a clutch.

I would suggest clutch for the T150. The pressure plate will need to fit the Y-Block flywheel. Of course the flywheel could be re-drilled.

Then there is the bellhousing. Does it fit the engine and transmission?

Anthony- you have the same trans- with the Lay****?

Yeah- car is currently running a non-od version of the Ford 3.03, so the bellhousing is good. I just have no idea which clutch and PP are in it now to order a new one.

  5. Yes
    And a y flywheel
Fit your current disc to the od trans and check

  6. Both discs should be 10 spline 1 1/16

If I understand your previous post here and elsewhere, the input shafts should be the same. You can measure and count the o/d version. That gives you the spline/size count on the disc. The clutch pressure plate. on a y block was typically 10.5 or 11”. Unless someone put the heavy truck flywheel on with a 12” which is pretty unlikely.

I’ve got a flywheel hanging on the wall at home, but I’m not home. I think it’s drilled for both the 10.5 and 11”. If so, you can pick the clutch pressure plate and buy the disc in the appropriate diameter and spline/input size.

If you don’t get an answer here, you will at yblocksforever or the ford barn.

Is the current clutch bad or slipping? Throw out bearing ok? Or just replace while it’s all apart?

The synchro first and the Lay**** combination is going to be a really neat set up. And you’ve got the Jeep top cover with the shifter, right?

Use all Ford parts and you will be fine. I am running mine with a 10" Ford clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, bellhousing , throw out bearing, clutch fork, and it works just like Henry designed it to.

  9. I just test fit a disc on both the 303 I have and the AMC/Ford OD.
It fit both. Just a random clutch disc from a ford I have.

  10. You are using a Ford transmission I do not know what flywheel you got. I always ran a 9.5" clutch with my Y blocks. Getting back to it if you have not changed the input shaft source a Ford clutch the correct diameter for what ever flywheel and pressure plate that you got.

    Thanks everyone.
miker- what I have is good but figured now was the time to replace if it’s all apart.

I will take a look at what’s in it when I pull it apart and probably post a picture or two to see if anyone sees something that stands out.
