Working out putting it on a newer chassis, either a 460 Ford or the Lincoln 368 that's in it backed to an auto. I have a 79 Chev 1 ton dually chassis and an 85 Econoline dually chassis right now, just working otu which has the most benefits.

I'd love to make it into a crew cab or put a panel body on it in the future...

I lucked out on this truck, I was looking at many different COE's and none fit me (I'm only 6 foot 2 / 265 pounds, but they are kinda small inside) then i was offered this Merc in trade for a 54 Merc wagon body I had access to, so I got the wagon and did the swap.

Great thread. Just spent most of the day looking at all the posts & pix. Got some ideas about building a COE to haul my 56 Chevy and Custom Mercs (50 & 51).

Which to choose? I am going to tackle one of these. Now to decide which one. Most in decent shape, but obviously still a lot of work to do.

The second one (3rd pic) and the 4th pic are the most original and the most complete. Though it will require a little more body work, but in the scheme of a project like this what is a few more dents? Cab corners need replaced and the roof has been pushed in a little. Steps in good shape. Owners manual still in jockey box. The blue one does have the grill and rad support but was removed to pull the engine.

This would be my choice. I love the looks of the earlier body style.

the earlier the better for me too! ;):cool:

  16. That would be my choice too, but my opinion is biased :D

  17. Agreed. Taller grille & a split window - who could deny that?

I have an opportunity to buy this 39 Ford COE, 3 Door on a dually chassis. A project many years in the making that is not finished. Has a 500ci Caddy motor and TH400 trans. Wheel base is setup for a car hauler.

    Any opinions on value?

Vintagehotrods: A great deal at that price range! I was thinking maybe 10K, or low teens. Asking price is mid-20s. I don't see the value? Am I thinking about this wrong?

I tend to be "cheap"! I put the value of the cab at $6000-7000, the chassis and drive train at $2000. I figured the crewcab COE cab to be worth twice as much as a regular 38-47 Ford COE cab. I'd be surprised if they sold it for even $20K.

I paid $4000 for this one with a Chevy crewcab dually chassis which included partial delivery closer to me. I had my Cadillac 500/Turbo 400 given to me by a friend at work but it needs a rebuild.

I still have the Chevy crewcab dually chassis for this one but I need to sell it because I moved to Arizona and found another one down here. It's still up in South Dakota with the cab.

And I sold this very nice one for $3200 and had it delivered to Syracuse, NY for another $400.

Really need more info to know what it is worth. What condition is the chassis it is on,what year, how fresh is the motor or trans ? The 4 door cab has to add a lot to the value. Lots of hours ,plus the cost of a second cab, etc. Even doing that yourself has to be a minimum of 100 hours. The body looks to be straight and rust free, buyt don't know if it was a perfect rust free truck to begin with, or it has been repaired. And at that, was it repaired properly or mickey-moused? All this figures greatly into what it is worth.
On a final thought, it is still a "project vehicle". If you can not finish it yourself and have to pay a shop to do so (who ever buys it), unless you have a ton of dough, you're better off buying one all finished. If the body is as good as it looks, the chassis is relatively new, good wheels and tires, and a low mileage motor with a good transmission, driveshaft Radiator ,etc, it may be worth $15K or a bit more. But certainly not $25K ,not in my book. :)

Baron: Been told it is an original 3 door cab, not pieced together from several cabs. Rust-free with lots of sheet metal fab completed, but driver's side panel is not complete. Cab was very rough when project started. Chassis is 1976 vintage dually, Caddy motor is not fresh, TBD miles. TH400 is questionable, but might be fresh? Project was started approx 10-15 yrs ago. Chassis is clean, Alloy rims, new tires (10-15 yrs ago?). 204" WB. Looks like it has some great "Bones", but asking absolute TOP $$ for them bones.
