Baron, I can see why you like to drive this big boy. It must be nice to be able to actually see what's up the road. I really hate getting behind these cars with windows so heavily tinted that they might as well be painted over.
But what I don't understand is why so many who own these great old trunks like to slam them into the dirt. What's the purpose? Style? IMHO, no matter how well the truck is done, no matter how nice it might look, slamming them detracts a great deal from them. Lowering them a couple of inches, okay. But to have them almost scraping bumpers and body parts on the pavement? No, I don't get it at all. Could someone explain it to me, please?

  2. RCONNER, If we need to explain it, you wouldn't understand. :D

for me it is a matter of simple math: cab height < garage door height

    You're probably right about that.
But I just like the way that they sit normally better than I do when they're in the dirt. I guess it all boils down to personal preference, doesn't it?
But some of the trucks ar just beautiful. Some of the craftsmanship that I see going into them is simply awesome!
I have to ask the question, are the vehicles or works of art? The answer must be: both.
    Would you agree?

Hmmm. I hadn't though of it like that before. At least there is a reason for it besides simple aesthetics. Which is a pretty durn good reason in itself.

  6. They are definitely vehicles and works of art.
Building a COE and having it look right, work right
    is no simple feat.
Mine's not done yet, so who am I to talk.

A lot of times trucks like these are riding on airbags, so
when they are parked they are dropped all the way down,
but raised up to actually drive them.

Garage door height was a factor in how high mine sits as well.

I used to like my stuff laid on the ground with EVERYTHING dragging. I used to think that was the perfect "stance". Just air it up an inch and drive away.

I still like my stuff lower than most, but my understanding of stance has changed. "Laid out" is NOT a stance.

Here's a Fargo tow truck belonging to the Spanish Automobile Club in the late 1940's or early 1950's.

It's a very clean looking rig. I wish that I had color photos of it. Can you imagine driving this to the next hot rod meet?

Actually its a matter of economics. Back in the day fuel mileage wasn't such an issue so the trucks weren't designed with that in mind. They sat so high that lots of air got underneath the truck, and when combined with the air going over the high top of the truck, created a low pressure differential area behind the truck that actually caused a drag on the truck. This resulted in more gas pedal pressure required to maintain speed and therefore more fuel usage.
Lowering the truck diverts most of the air over the top and there is little pressure differential, allowing the truck to be more economical in terms of fuel. Its called the BS Factor.

  16. Koose, a very nice video. Is Hot Rodding your full time work? Looks like it was best to have you last in the race as you threw up an awful lot of dirt... wouldn't want to put rocks through the windshields of the other cars!

  17. Damn that video is awesome!! Your Wagoneer is looking badass too. Love the camber on the back wheels

The reason that it's been in the shop for 5 years was he was changing the steering from left to right.
