They are a helluva lot better pointed the right direction. Plus they catch a lot more wind at the back of the trailer. With fuel as high as it is now it can make a substantial difference in costs on a long trip.

I know. I was just stating a fact. I'm just trying to save him some grief. Having just brought a tail heavy trailer back 650 miles from Albuquerque at 57 mph because it would try to pass you if you went 60 mph. It made for a really long day.

  5. I'd rather haul it backwards than leave it sit! If aerodynamics is such a big fuel cost stand a sheet of plywood up at an angle on the frame rails leaning against the back of the cab, tie it on, instant aerodynamics. (Plywood will probably cost more than the extra fuel)
If tongue weight is going to be a problem, scare up a 50 gallon drum, strap it on the frame at the front of the trailer and fill with water. the few dollars it will cost in fuel will well be worth the handling improvement

Are you going to build it or flip it?

Went and measured my '50 GMC COE. It has the original axles and 20" Budd wheels too. The front outside track width was about 72" including the sidewall bulge of the tire. The rear inside dual was about 67" including the bulge. I know the '42 is a slightly different animal but I can't imagine it would be any wider.

I had lots of tongue weight....ever see the stock rear end in one of these monsters? As for fuel mileage, towing the profile of a sheet and a half of plywood makes no difference if it is forward or backward :D

It must have been the go cart on the back of yours that made the difference.;)

I'm already out here, I'm at my sons in Kalispell. I think I'll leave here tomorrow and head down to Boise as I have a 33 Chevy cab waiting for me there. I wouldn't have room for the whole COE but would for the sheetmetal. I have 8' of room left on the trailer. Besides the 33 I already have two 27 T roadsters, 27 T sedan, 27 T coupe and an early 30's pu bed

Damn your picking us dry!, I won't have the COE home for about a week. I do have a 42 ford 2 door sedan, and could use a 27 roadster or two if you were needing more room on your trailer. ;)pm me

Except for the pu bed it was all bought before I left home

  23. I think someone should build one! Door hinges might take some ingenuity, but otherwise it is just sheet metal. Don't know where to put the engine though!

Seriously? If the thing doesn't drive home on it's own power the fuel to get it home is going to be the least expensive purchase in ones future. Not to mention if fuel is to expensive to get it then just leave it there because you can't afford a project car. ;)

He didn't say it was to costly. He said it could make a difference in fuel costs, which is not the same thing. Besides how many projects drive home under their own power? That's what trailers are for.

    I love these trucks!

  30. Locomotive Breath, My guess is that it would take an extra 10% to haul it backwards, if that is a deal breaker, pay the $3/mile that a trucker wants. I offered a constructive suggestion and it is still cheaper/simpler than some other alternatives. As is, it isn't necessary because the truck will fit on the trailer cab forward.
