I sold this '53 Chevrolet COE, Holmes model 525 Wrecker about 4 years ago, to a guy in Louisiana. A friend of mine struck a deal on it a few weeks ago, & it arrived back here in town Thursday, a week ago. Been helping him put it back together all this week. Hung the running boards back on it this morning. unnamed (15).jpg

  7. I love that combination. Did you combine the parts or did they start life that way?

When I first purchased the Wrecker back in the late 80's it was mounted on a '51 Dodge COE, that had been****embled by Ernest Holmes Co. in Tennessee, when it was new. I removed it from the Dodge, & mounted it on the '53 Chevy COE around 1993, or '94.

This is going to be a bigger version, of what I first had. 2013-12-15152651_zps67a127a3.jpg

  12. That looks like a very solid old Chevy. Have you already been through the running gear? Those wheels and tires look pretty fresh. Will the frame get a clip to fit the wrecker bed, or do you have a sleeper stashed away somewhere to make up the difference??

This COE is a Heavier Duty 3 1/2 ton GMC 470 series. It was originally owned by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, & is virtually rust free. I had thought about grafting a Factory Sleeper Cab, that I had found onto it to take up the space, but decided to ditch that idea, & just extend the Wrecker Service body instead. It will look more original like that. I removed the Holmes Heavy Duty model W35 from a 1946 Chevrolet conventional that I once owned.

  15. Those are nice looking DTs and they don't look to be native Michigan trucks. Did you find them locally or from a western state?

phat rat, those are sweet. I have a 47 509 coe, plan to keep it original so if you happen to be taking either of those apart for a hot rod etc let me know, some of the axle and engine parts are getting tough to find. Mine is running the budd style wheels like on the blue one.

what is the hauler you are using, looks like it might be a fwd trailer type?

I spent a good part of yesterday getting the bodies off the original frames. Now their ready to put on different frames and make a cool hauler or pickup

    Thanks Boss! :) It's a dream come true!! It's built on a 3/4 ton suburban chassis with a 454 big block and a turbo 400*******. :)

Very cool! Did you use two cabs to stretch it, or part of a burb shell and another truck cab?

    Hi!

We used just one cab - we cut it in half and made a jig to slide it back 31 1/2 inches. Once we figured out the distance we needed to stretch it - which was the suburban frame minus the single cab minus the 48 truck stepside bed. So once we slid it back - we made our own side panels and a new roof - from scratch by bending large pieces of sheet metal between 8" diameter pipes To get the radii - close to the original ones on the trucks roof and bottom of the "Quarter panels" :) :) :) After we welded everything up - we took two more windows from pick up doors from trucks from the same era - welded them in and just patched up the missing pieces - which were just small peices in front of the windows. Honestly - it was pretty neat to see how my buddy figured out how to do this, and we love how it came out. Most trucks have square back windows - this one has the angled back windows that make it unique and gave us a nice spot for a handle to get in and out of the truck with. :) :) :) Here's a link to our build page on photo bucket. Its best viewed with the "Chrome" browser.. :) : ) :)

Thanks guys - this truck would have never been finished without those funny hats!! haha! :) We may have to put a nice sun visor on Mr. Coe - to make him feel like he's one of the boys - wearing these funny hats!!! :) :) :)
