COE COE Picture thread (imported from main board)

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by Duration, Oct 30, 2007.

  1. He was going maybe 50 mph max on downhill runs & I tried to go slow enough that if a red light hit, I could have him catch up & I would snap more pics, but no good before I had to swing off the road.

  2. Anybody intersted in a 48/49 Chevy COE down near San Diego, the price is right for a complete looking Truck, maybe even free
Send me an email on willys@aapt.net.au and I will post you a couple of pics, It just won't happen for me on the HAMB

Does anybody here know what year model Chevy COE used a stick shift like this? My -50 has it attached to the floor.
    Thanks for any help!

  4. I know that by 57, (the LCFs) they had a fairly normal looking shifter, not bent forward like that one. I'm sure others can get closer on the year.

I have a couple four speeds from that era that came with my '55 second series, and the shifter looks like that, if it were installed backwards.

The gmcs had that shifter. Chevy's had the linkage.

'47-'54 GMC COE's had the shifter come straight up through the floor between the driver, p***enger seat cushions. Chevy, had the full length seat bottom, with the shifter linkage coming from under the seat cushion, connecting to a short shifter mounted to the center engine cover. This put the shifter in the normal position, compared to a conventional truck. This photo looks like something, someone rigged up. Definitely a Chevy engine, & I see a Chevy under the cab mounted air cleaner, laying there also.

I don't think that Divco, is actually on a COE based ch***is. I saw one, that was, & it had the COE hood.

Anything can be changed (and maybe no one cares), but this appears to be a '40- the only waterfall grill model with the emblems ahead of the vent doors.

    Thanks for the help!
Maybe it has a shift stick from a regular truck or something..
It also has a rear axle with electric 2 speed and dual wheel cylinders at each wheel. I was told it was a -50 but the dual cylinders says -51 or newer.. Maybe it has been swapped too.
My project -50 doesn't have parking brake on the driveshaft like this ch***is does eather.

  15. I don't know about the GMCs, but the Chevys could be gotten with a 6v53 Detroit 2 cycle diesel. They would make a lot more noise that a ***mins and at 210hp they got down the road fairly well too.

That Jimmy must of originally had the GMC 678 ci V8 g***er, (think downsized 702 V12). Shame they replaced it with a 2 bbl 350 running a 4 bbl adaptor. I bet that little 350 struggles mightily just to push it through the air at 55 mph.

Thanks for posting, cool truck though. It would be fun to build up with a modern diesel.

  17. Heading downhill on 290 (for those in the Austin area), I don't recall speeds over 55. Legal max on that road is now 60.

coe project 032.jpg coe project 030.jpg coe project 031.jpg Well, I'm up page 100, my head exploded. Never saw so many cool trucks. I have a 47 that I will be using several of the ideas found here. Mine is on a 2001 chev 2500 express van ch***is shortened 15 inches with a ls motor from a 2000 Yukon. If I can get the wiring straightened out. I love how Baron did his bed, definitely going that route. Here a couple of pictures.

  19. This is still one of my favorite threads. I "accidentally" stumbled into an opportunity I could not refuse this fall and after one failed attempt in November hauled this one from it's "final resting place" 150 miles away on New Years Day from the ranch it started life on, with the original 1948 ***le. A one owner cream puff! Hoping I can put together a ramp bed hauler half as nice as a lot of the stuff I've seen here. Only 1 minor incident unloading what I thought was a truck with a locked up rear axel that magically unlocked when we got the ramp bed trailer tilted into the shop. Gutter man will be here Monday. Take note, If you buy something that has sat outside for 30+ years, don't test the emergency brake until it is on the trailer. And then don't trust is will work in reverse. 20. Better a gutter, than the whole back of the garage, I guess! Looks like a nice score.

  21. Yea, luckily it was only 11° so it made sliding the duals up onto the trailer a lot easier with the right equipment. Spent yesterday going over everything and got the brakes sorted out on the rear end, but could not make the motor run. The #2 & #3 cylinders are full of rust so my guess is the coolant went bad and froze and cracked the head long ago. That's a 20' special ordered original bed on this old girl. I need to figure out what I can make from it.

the way I understood it was the other bidder originally outbid Pratte that year for it. that I saw. both were sitting in the front row just a few people apart. but what happened afterwards that we heard rumors of was that other bidder also brought like 20-30 cars through out the week that year and never paid for them and they found out that same evening that bidders credentials turned out to be bogus and they approached Ron and he took it. that was the big announcement the whole next day they kept repeating that Ron was awarded the futurliner

I believe the Futureliner was auctioned for charity. I suspect the bid does not reflect the actual value but rather the amount of tax write off needed.
