  1. I don't know where "panther city" is, but I think you are confused between "split rim" and "split ring". Split rims are outlawed, but split ring are still being used and any good tire shop will service them.

"There is NO Way anyone could find an insurance company that would cover that original one being driven on the roads."

I disagree I think virtually any company would. But for sure any company that insures hot rods and antiques would insure a stock C.O.E.

    what a neat ol' truck.
Imagine the stories connected with it.

I like how the deco wing carries on back to the trailer's tailend.
That would make a great family camper.

  11. I've seen it post somewhere before, with an interesting story, don't remember much about it.

Looking through these pages but haven't found it yet.

Anyone here from San Fernando, California, and if you are, do you remember "Speed" Mason's hand built '39 Dodge COE that was still in use in the 1970's in the SF Valley. He was a welder. We called him up to come extend some chimney re-bar. We were just kids and when he rolled up in the '39 we laughed. He told us he had made the body by hand cutting out doors with hack saw blades. It was art-deco to the max with rear body skirt that came to a sharp point. Would love to see it again.

Just for the hell of it I ordered two of these Cars cabovers. I can't leave anything stock! One will probably become a ramp truck soon...

  17. I know this isn't traditional but I thought one or two of you might get a kick out this "slightly modified" COE a friend had built. I helped drive it from Indianapolis to Portland, Oregon a week ago. It certainly turned a few heads.

  19. Hey 23, here are a few more of the back and IMG_3784.JPG Mother 2.jpg Mother 3.jpg Mother 4.jpg interior but this thing really isn't as nice in person as it looks in pictures and will be getting another make over in Oregon. The cab is a 50 Chevy COE with various truck and suburban parts added. The truck was started two owners ago and chassis and metal work are pretty nice. The body sits on an '88 Top Kick with a brand new Cat 3208T and Allison 6 speed that cruised at 80mph with the Spartan and goose neck behind (after the new ECM/TCM figured out who it was). It has been in construction off and on for 7 years so I don't have any photos of the drive train. I think there were some in the ebay ad by the original owner a few years ago. It was an adventure.

  20. Is this the same one that was in yellowish primer many pages back in this thread? It looks familiar.

    Mmmm... candy corn!

I'm certain there are detailed photos of build earlier in this thread including chassis and engine. In fact, I think I'm the one who posted them.

  22. That multi - window top is interesting.
Got any interior shots that show it?
Assuming that was a factory design, or... ?

  23. You may be right Daddio, it is certainly a memorable pile of parts. And my wife said the same thing when she looked inside about the color insert on the door!
23, as I said, I wasn't there for the any of the build but the raised portion of the top certainly appears to me to be from a similar AD suburban roof section, though it may have been shortened and narrowed to match the truck cab lines. The sides are a COE door and two pickup doors with two "back half" window frames on each. The center door is stationary and has "B" pillar jams front and back. Rear doors are suicide. The entire body is steel, no fiberglass anywhere.
Also the chassis was upgraded to a full Kelderman air ride front and rear so it drives pretty nice.

  24. Yes Steve, same truck. I asked for ideas for the headlights, which I still think look weird. The present owner decided to leave them as the "final" build just kept dragging on and running up the bills. He may change them at his shop.

  25. Ha... hadn't noticed that.

  26. I agree on the headlights. Maybe move them down and in, to center them in the panel beside the grille, then make them bigger, remember the first gen Dodge van headlight trim.

  27. I was leaning that way for a while Steve, but then I looked at a late 50's Mack "B" and I think those would be the ticket. Reshape the top outside corner of the fender and use the same headlight bucket that is there now. Probably only move it down and in about half that far so they approximate the stock center to center width. Not sure if they should be tunneled like the Mack or surface mount like the original?

  29. Oct. 2013... obv. there was progress on the build.

I can dig the whole setup, however I know zero about the engine & *that* orange...

Hope the owner likes the color is all I can say & still be nice.
