I've always wanted a 51-53 Dodge COE like that!

BTW, it's site rules to make your first post an introductory one, better get on that before people get upset.

  2. Here's another pic of the insides. Since I am not sure of my body work skills it makes me nervous.. Does $600 sound like a decent price. All the chrome and trim seems intact and there

Sounds good to me, I'd pay that for it, and I have body shop skills!

I would like to see the floor in it, so far the interiro is the same as a pick-up, but how bad is the floor hump?

When I was looking for a COE I checked out a few including a 46 Ford and a 56 Chevrolet snub nose, and they had such a small amount of floor space, and I am over 6 feet tall, so i just could not get comfortable in them, so I got a 1956 Mercury COE. (the floor hum/dog house is all of 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep)

  4. Thanx Ln7NUT. The floor hump is 3-4" high from what I can recall and I didn't notice how wide it was. When I sat in it I had a lot of leg room and even though I am only 5'9" I have a 34" inseam so I need a lot of room for my legs. That seemed ok even with the old bench seat it has in it. The floor has about 6 inches of old seat and roof liner laying on it and I was more focused on looking for rot holes than paying attention to the hump. I should have paid closer attention to that detail. Here's the pic that shows the floor a little better. Thanx for your input on this. Much appreciated

    ----------------------
It depends on what the registered GVW
of the truck is - and whether or not it has
air-brakes or is hauling Haz Mat. So long
as the GVW is under 26,000 lbs and the
    truck doesn't have air-brakes - and you're
    not hauling hazardous materials in
quantities high enough to legally require
placarding, you don't need a CDL.

    Mart3406
    ---------------------
    (Excerpted from:
    www.testquestionsandanswers.com/cdl/texas.html )

    -------------
To operate a commercial vehicle in one
of the following classifications, you must
    have a Texas CDL Endorsement.

CLASS A - This classification applies
only to "combination" vehicles with a
    Gross Combination Weight Rating
    (GCWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds,
    provided the Gross Vehicle Weight
Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being
    towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.

CLASS B - This class includes single
    or combination vehicles where the
GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds
26,000 pounds. The vehicle in tow
    must not exceed 10,000 pounds.

CLASS C - Vehicles designed to transport
16 or more passengers, including the
    driver, and vehicles placarded for
hazardous materials, that do not meet
the criteria for Class A or B above fall
    under this classification.

    About the CDL Knowledge Tests

You will have to take one or more
    knowledge tests, depending on what
class of license and what endorsements
you need. All CDL applicants must take
the general knowledge test. The table
below will tell you what additional tests
    you must take, if any.

    Take If...
    Passenger Transport ...you want to
    drive a bus

    Air Brakes ...your vehicle has
    air brakes

    Combination Vehicles ...you want
    to drive combination vehicles

    Hazardous Materials ...you want
to haul hazardous material or waste
    in amounts which require placarding

Tankers ...you want to haul liquids
    in bulk

    Doubles/Triples ...you want to pull
    double or triple trailers

    Skills Tests

If you pass the required knowledge
test(s), you can take the CDL skills tests.
There are three types of general skills
that will be tested: pre-trip inspection,
basic vehicle control, and on-road driving.
You must take these tests in the type of
vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.

    1. Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: You will
be tested to see if you know whether
your vehicle is safe to drive. You will be
asked to do a pre-trip inspection of your
vehicle and explain to the examiner
what you would inspect and why.

    2. Basic Vehicle Control: You will be
tested on your skill to control the vehicle.
You will be asked to move your vehicle
forward, backward, and turn it within a
defined area. These areas may be
marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers,
or something similar. The examiner will
tell you how each control test is to be
    done.

    3. On-road Test: You will be tested on
your skill to safely drive your vehicle
in a variety of traffic situations. The
situations may include left and right
    turns, intersections, railway crossings,
curves, up and down grades, and single
or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways.
The examiner will tell you where to drive.

What Are The Other Requirements For
    A CDL?

    Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
require drivers to pass a physical
examination once every 2 years. The main
    physical requirements include good hearing,
20/40 vision with or without glasses or
corrective lenses, and a 70-degree field of
vision in each eye. Drivers must not be
    colorblind.

What Should I Bring To The Department
    Of Motor Vehicles?

In addition to testing, all first time original
applicants must visit a local Texas Driver
License office and present and do the
    following:

    * Present proof of identity.

    * Present proof of social security
    number.

    * Present proof of Texas vehicle
    registration and liability insurance
    if you own a vehicle.

    * Consent to be photographed,
    fingerprinted, and provide your
signature at the time of application.

What Fees Will I Have To Pay?

    Fees are as follows:

    Original Commercial Driver
    License: $61

    CDL Examination: $11 per exam

$600 is very fair for that Dodge coe
at the farm auction a couple weeks ago, the scrappers were paying $1000 for that right there.
    i'm still nauseated.

The body doesn't look all that bad. I think it'd
look great sitting on a '93 Dodge 1-ton diesel
4X4 chassis too!. In a follow-up post you
mentioned that you could get it for $600.
For that price, if you don't grab it, a scrapper
surely will and it'll be gone forever.

  10. TGIF all! I appreciate everyone's advice on the 51 Dodge. and I did post an introduction on the newbie area. Sorry for the offense. I called the old timer that owns the old beast and told him I'd take it. Will run over there Monday and pay for it before someone else does. Is there a website on where to find the production totals for the Dodge versus Ford/Chev. I googled that and couldn't find anything that was helpful. Just curious how rare Dodge's are versus any other model. Thanx again for all your advice on this.

I do not believe actual production figures are available. But in light trucks (1 ton and less). Chevy and Ford each built about 5:1 to Dodge. International truck production was similar to Dodge and Studebaker about 1/5 of that.

Just a little tip about when you go to buy
it on Monday. If he's asking 600 bucks for
it, take that much with you, in the form
of six 100-dollar bills. But only put four of
them in your wallet and maybe put the
other two in an envelope and leave it in the
glovebox of your car. Try offering him 400
dollars for it and show him the four bills you
have in your wallet. You just might end up
getting it for that. And if that doesn't work
and he still insists on the full 600-dollar
asking price, you're still ok. It's worth
    a try anyway! :)

By the way too. Once you get it home and
pull the cab and anything else you can use
off it, you can probably sell the original
flathead six out of it - maybe to somebody
here on on the HAMB even, to recoup some
of your money - and then some more still
by selling the frame, rearend and other
unusable parts for scrap. With a bit of luck
you could maybe just about break even on
    the cab.

Good luck with everything.Hope you get it!

A little more (a lot more actually...) cutting and welding to enlarge the rear fenders. Just have to finish the leading edge, weld up a couple more seams and they will be ready to remove, knock out the dents, hammer and grind all the welds and off to the blaster.

The proportions look real good. Your truck is going to turn out nice.

  15. Hi,
It has been suggested that my first post, that had my name and location and what I am building wasn't enough introduction.
    so I will try again.

I live in calgary , self emplyed auto/collectables restoration, custom paint, been in the industry 27 years. Got into old cars naturally,my father loved them and he had a '27 Chrysler, and a '52 Meteor. I presently have a '69 Chevy short fleet ,396,3 speed lever, and a '39 GMC COE that is slowly getting worked on. Plan is to build a pickup style truck. Although I have had some cars, and I really like cars,
I've always been a truck guy.

Found this while surfing the web on the weekend. Being built at SAR. Cant wait to see it done

    Electric 1939 COE

What you are looking at here is a 1939 Ford COE (Cab Over Engine) that has been radically modified. Two COE’s and one 1938 Pick-up are being used to create a Crew Cab COE that is almost 4 feet longer and exactly 20” wider to fit on a Ford F-650 chassis, powered by a 500hp/800ft-lbs Electric motor, with a custom two-speed transmission and 180kWh of Lithium-ion batteries. It’ll be able to fully recharge from empty in 30 minutes using DC quick-charge, or four hours using 220V AC. The cost of the electricity for a full charge will be about $21, less than an eighth what it would cost to fuel a diesel truck of similar size. This COE is the largest and most heavily-modified of a series of trucks we have performed the metal work on for a company called EcoTruc. All of the trucks are showpieces and prototypes for EcoTruc, which is building electric trucks for the utility and municipal fleet market. This truck will be used as a show vehicle, but also a functional on-the-road technology demonstrator. It will also serve as the tractor for EcoTruc’s vehicle-transporter trailer that will take the other trucks to shows and their 1934 Ford electric race car to Bonneville and El Mirage. The race car will be powered by the same motors as this truck, with radically different gearing, aiming to go three times as fast!

Tons more pics can be found here

I LOVE this thread! I am wondering has anyone ever attempted or looked into puting one of these on a newer step van chassis? They are already forward control and it seems they might be easier to adapt. That said I haven't found the Cab I want yet so I have no idea the measurements of the 40's 50s coe's. Any idea where I could find those?
