Alright, 55 plymouth, 241 v-8 converted to 12 volt, petronix, now heres the problem, i've blown two coils and i assume that because I have no ballast resistor i'm pumping too much through the coil and blowing em' up, now the question i have is: are there any coils that i can use that do NOT need an external ballast resistor AND won't blow up? or should suck it up a get a ballast resistor?
I really don't think lack of a resistor is destroying coils....I think Petronix even tells you that if you're running one, continue and if you aren't, continue
what do the directions tell you to do? you did read them, right? every petronix i have installed came with directions that clearly stated how much resistance your coil should be....and also covered the use of ballast resistors
i had to run a ballast resistor in line on mine. burned up first coil without one. added a resistor now no problems. hope the helps
Instructions: 1. Many vehicles came equipped with ballast resistors or resistance wires. To achieve optimum performance we recommend removal of these components. Use with an ignition coil rated at .6 ohms or greater.
Yhe ballast resister is mainly to protect the points.......I'm suprised you havn't burnt them up. Install one, you need it...It may also solve your coil problem. Why don't you want a ballast resistor?
He's replaced the points with an electronic. They work fine on 12 volts. Make sure you buy a 12 volt coil, and not a 6 volt.
Sorry.....didnt see that............My old eyes........LOL However, the later model MOPARS with electronic ignition also use a ballast resister.........I would suggest using one, and of course that 12 volt coil.
thanks for the replies, well, i have had the petronix in for a while with one of their flamethrower coils and it lasted about 6 months then blew out then i put in and accel super stock coil, that one lasted about 2-3 weeks, my real problem is the exploding coils, any other ideas for what would be causing that other than the lack of a ballast resistor?
Question: How many volts does your alternator produce at 1500 RPM? Question: What is the voltage reading at the + side of the coil? Question: If you hook a jumper cable to your block and then the other side to the negative battery terminal, does the RPM change?
I Had one coil blow then for some reason i ended up adding another ground and havnt had a problem since...good luck, hope you figure it out.
