I have a 77 GMC Sprint (for those who don't know what that is it is the same as an Elcamino)
I blow a rear seal in the axle. I have since changed the bearings and seals on both sides. Also had to change the brake pads because of the grease.
I drove it again and have grease coming out of the seal again same side. It seems i also have a problem with my control arms. Could the bushings in the rear control arm, be the reason i blow the same seal twice.
How hard is it to change the bushings in the rear control arms?

What do you mean this is not a vehicle subject to discuss here. I am new to this site and i thought i would get some help. But if it is a site just to show your cars then i guess i am in the wrong place.
Does anyone know of any site that would help with techical question?

Strictly speaking this site is for vehicles 1964 or earlier. But, to answer your question I wouldn't expect the control arm bushing to be affecting the axle seal. I suppose if the control arm was in bad enough shape that the entire axle was out of line with the car it would accelerate wear on the axle bearing, but if it was that bad you'd have problems even driving the car.

  5. There is plenty of technical discussion on here but it is really for Traditional Rods and Customs, kind of a mid sixties cut off.
Quick answer, the control arm bushing issue has nothing to do with the axle seal. Sounds like a good chance that the axle is worn where the seal goes so it just can't seal anymore. Look for a groove worn in the axle.

Was trying to be nice about it since your new here, we do pre 64 traditional stuff here, not 77 gmc sprint.

In your defense, if your were taking that thing apart as a donor for something that fits in here, yeah it would be ok.

Yeah this is a funny place. You can talk about a drag car or a rod you built yesterday, but not about late model production cars. Anything that is not old style hot rodding will get you a public flogging around here. It is precisely why I don't post very much here. Been flogged too many times myself already.

  8. warpspeed...what's wrong with a little flogging? i've been here almost 7 years and get it almost every day. so much so if i don't i miss it

  9. And that's the way it should be since the whole premise of this place is TRADITIONAL RODS & CUSTOMS Period!

  10. I say cut her a "little" slack, according to her profile, she drove an A to high school and her family is into Street rods/ Hot rods. That should help her out a bit ,Maybe? It ain't like she's asking about a Hyundai or ?. Any-way ,take a look at the vent on the top of the axle tube . It's probably all clogged up with road grime or dried grease. If you can't see anything on the outside, try popping the little cap off and jamming a small phillips in there cause it is most likely clogged inside. Bushing got nuttin to do with it. Good luck, Mitch.

people are lame here sometimes. it is a rear axle question, not really a post 64 car question. the same question could be posed for a HOT ROD with the same problem.... even the same rear end.

    lighten up!

  12. O K so let me ask this then, I'm building a "traditional" looking hot rod but it's a glass body, fenders etc. I have not been " flogged" or chastised here for this and I really enjoy this site, but am I in the wrong place? I've had some really good response on my build so I don't feel like I don't belong, I get the meaning of the "word" traditional and I respect anyone who has the knowledge, and the ability to bring back this sacred iron. I've done it 4 or 5 times myself, this time I wanted to try a glass car but with a 60s hot rod look. If I'm wrong about this tell me.

This is wrong on so many levels, that I don't even know where to start!

I'm here to help though, so give me your address, and I won't charge you to pick up the offense causing vehicle!:D

Really, I think sometimes some of us take ourselves way to seriously, and lose focus of what we are doing here. I hardly see where answering this question is some big violation of our "ethics". It was posed in a manner in which to learn, by someone who could have posed this question for one of her other cars.
