Im in the market for a set of coilovers for my project, but am undecided on what brands to look for? Anybody have any first hand experience with aldan or qa1, etc.... and which do you prefer for a daily driven street rod? Thanks guys!
We recently switched from Aldan to Afco...more options for street/strip/autocross,etc. I've not used QA1, so I don't know how they stack up to Afco.
I have used QA1 on all of my builds with good luck. if you go with any of them make sure to get the bearing adjusters.
Thanks guys! Its a toss up between the aluma matics and proma stars and ultra rides. Anybody prefer one over the other? I know the Aluma matics are non adjustable, does his make a big difference? Also, does anybody have the dimensions for the mounting bolt diameter and mounting bushing width? Im mocking up my brackets and just need these dimensions to get it buttoned up. Thanks again
I don't get it,,you ask about two specific types of shocks you get 3 of us tell you we prefer the QA-1's and now you go in a different direction,,why ask! HRP
Whatever brand shock / coilover assembly you get, make sure the spring diameter you choose has the very widest range of spring rates available. Easier to fine tune. Gary
What Wingman says - I will not use anything other than Bilsteins and gladly pay the premium knowing that my car's ride and handling will be transformed. These are hands down the best shocks out there bar none....
We are getting ready to roll out our new shock line at Flaming River. These are all double adjustible at a single adjustible price from what I have been told. Made in USA too. Have a few features over the QA1's also. Stay Tuned, should be ready in the next 30 days or so as SEMA gets near.
HRP, Those three are all QA1's coilovers. They offer the proma stars, aluma matics and ultra ride, all QA1 products, my question is which one do most people run? Sorry for the misunderstanding
Totally unaware there were that many different shocks available in their line. The shocks I used aluminum,,possibly the ultra ride. I use the type that have the knob,,they seem to have infinite adjustment from so soft that they will bottom out with one person standing on the bare frame to 3 big guys standing there and the adjustment is so stiff the frame doesn't budge. HRP
Look at Strange double adjustables, not a common hot rod shock, but real nice stuff made here in Illinois. Great support if you need it. They can valve for your car weight, and with double adjustments, you can dial them in perfect.
Gee, HRP, why did you get so upset when you tought the OP was not going to follow your recommendation? I saw several suggestions and no one else got P O'd. I haven't had any problems with Aldans or QA1's but I do prefer the Bilsteins, but I'm gong to get mad no matter which one he chooses.
No skin off my nose,,and to be perfectly honest I was unaware the 3 types he quote were QA-1's,,he ask a question and I though he had came up with different shocks,,my mistake and in no way pissed me off,,this is a public forum and the OP asked for opinions. For what it's worth I don't care what he uses,,I offered my opinion and wasn't looking for how you felt about my disposition! Actually I'm kinda amazed you are on the main forum busting my balls and not busy running you post count up welcoming newbies! Your observations of my comments is your problem and does ruffle my feathers! HRP
Hey!! I had posted before on another thread about my coilovers. I have Aldans and the shaft came out at the top(thought it was my fault)called Aldan told them the situation, sent them the shock(medium flat rate box with insurance $15.00 + or -)they fixed it and sent it back no charge even no shipping.Last week the other one did the same thing, called Aldan again,They said something is wrong(alignment, bottoming out?)I checked my travel and found out the shock was bottoming out before the axle was hitting the rubber stop(senior moment)sent them the shock, fixed it again for free and they also determined that the spring was to light so I got new springs. should be getting them soon! Great customer service!! Pete
I personally have always used BC Racing coil overs. Used them in my drift car last 2 seasons no drama's, my rally car and also for my hillclimber. I don't know if they would commonly be run in hotrods but man my cars are freaking awesome, realible and handle rad...... So BC for my 49 Merc
FYI--HRP I don't give a rat's butt about post count. It means nothing to me, but I do try to make new people feel welcome, unlike you.
Thanks for the info on shock selsction. I am in the market for rear C/O for my 62 F100 unibody. And lets chill out on the BS about who loves whos count or who is the most lovey dovey.
Thanks for all the suggestions! Im probably leaning more towards the QA1s, theyre in my price range and seem to have a wide range of options. Is there a big difference between to aluma matics, proma stars and ultra rides? Which one do you guys run? Is the adjustability worth it? Thanks again!
I'll say it again: BILSTEINS - transforms the ride of any car. Best shock out there bar none. Why settle for mediocre or second best - it's like settling for a silver medal at the Olympics when you could win gold...
