Since the vibration is speed specific, can you find a strobe on-the-car balancer? Depending on the operator, you can isolate the rpm that the imbalance occurs. It can be eliminated, but may show up at a different rpm, hopefully at a speed you either go through quickly or never reach.
It doesn’t pinpoint the cause (tire, brake, hub) but balances all the rotating m***.
With your background I may be preaching to the choir. But it’s worth a try.
I solved a lot of ride disturbance issues with one in the past, when our tires were erroneously blamed.
Another tip is spin it up, note the imbalance point, rotate the tire 180* on the wheel and do it again. Same, better or worse?

I'm headed to the tire shop in the morning to see what I can get done. I hate working on these tires and rims as an innocent accidental slip can ruin a $400+wheel. I've got Coker tires (Excelsiors)on my daily driver deuce pickup. My normal highway freeway speed for the truck is 75+ mph and on the 2 lanes around here most run about 70. This is rural Nebraska and anywhere is a long ways away. I've had them on several other hot rods and they work fine. This car is so disappointing as I used the big BFG's several years ago on several highboy 32's with no problems.

    Hello,

For all things tires, whether they are factory tires or custom special tires, there is always the chance that they balance well, but are still rough riding. The amount of weights tells a story and the spinning machine can pinpoint the quality of the tires in question. Whether or not they are “name brand” tires, is besides the point. Most, if not all tires cannot be perfectly round and be sold that way. the m*** produced product is formed in a “perfectly round” process and thought to be ok or close... to round.

Ok/close, only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. So, have your local tire shave place take their machines on all 4 tires and stepback to see how much stuff is on the ground as it is processing the shaving process. Yes, we had plenty of New tires on those machines in our old So Cal neighborhood. We were sticklers for smooth riding cruisers, high performance race cars and those future station wagons hauling our granddaughter around to her growing up activities.

Back then, we had access to those tire shaving places and they did a excellent job of taking off the excess or out of round rubber. It left a ton of rubber on the floor, but that more than made up for the smoothest rides for all of our hot rods and current station wagons. It is hard to drive a car that rides rough, then smooth, then at odd times handles ****py, etc. So, the current trend is to find a reliable tire shaving place as the first step in “truing” out of round tires…

Then, it is the checking of suspension components, repair or replace them for the best handling/braking situation for your hot rod or family of cars… and yes, “round” tires are not always round…

Since you are in Nebraska, there must be places that shave tires in this day and age. In Long Beach, Nate Jones Tire Shop is the best around. Race cars in the Long Beach Gran Prix and others use the shops skills. He graduated one cl*** ahead of me at Long Beach Polytechnic H.S.

But, there should be a similar tire shaving place in most communities. There still is a need for such services. You can balance to yours or shop’s skills, but unless the tire is round, it is all for naught.

We have used a tire shaving place all the way back to our teenage, Flathead sedan delivery days through all of our hot rods and sedans. With new technology in tires and construction, it has gotten better with new tires for our current crop of station wagons. But there is always an odd ball tire set or sets of tires out of round. I've been talking to a couple guys running the big Hoosiers and they have both had good luck. When we get a dry day I'm going to see if the tire shop can help. I'm not giving up. I've ran these tires in years past with no problems so we'll see what happens. The section width of the Hoosiers (13.4) may be a problem as the section width of the BFG's is (11.50) and tire to wheel well clearance is tight. The American Rebel 15X10' have a 4.25 back set. It's possible Hoosiers may require a different rear wheel with around a 3 inch back set?
