Not sure the bias plies are still available, a year or so ago they were drastically discounted as the radials came widely available. I should reiterate what I say, if you're speaking with regards to the Sport Stahl type commonly in use by so many here on the Hamb the above may be true, if wanting the so-called antique type, I believe they continue be listed in various sizes.
Try a search if you haven’t already. It seems that some years back there was negative comments on them regarding roundness and runout.
I would expect that after some years they would have corrected such an issue. The Excelsior radials aren't offered in the sizes I'm look at.
Many tire brands continually suffer from runout issues and go un noticed. I used to work in the tire industry specifically at a high end tire shop and saw it a lot. Have you looked into the Kontio tires?
About 15 years ago I built a deuce highboy roadster and used Excelsior bias belted tires that looked identical to their current radial offerings. They worked fine although I didn't drive the car a lot before it went to Japan. I've got the current version Excelsior radials on my daily driver deuce pickup, deuce highboy roadster and am using them on a new roadster. Expense aside they work drive great.
Any issues? "Okay" is kinda neutral for a review. I'm thinking about using a set on my '32 sedan. It's almost totally stock with juice brakes. 40+ year old restoration car. Not even 100hp so just for cruising, car cruise nights, ice cream runs, maybe to work once and a while.
tjm73, They ride good, no vibration or out of round concerns. Haven't taken them on long journeys but around town I would recommend them. My suggestion is to use new tubes and make sure the wheels you are using aren't rusty.
The Excelsiors are what we'd call the affordable brand bias ply here in Australia, I've run the 5.00/5.25 17-inch variety on the front of my '34 in my avatar for 5 or 6 years prior to going in for a full overhaul without any issues with the tires.
Are the kontios any good? I've been wanting a set of www tires at least as a set of switch out tires on a separate set of wheels and the prices on the kontios look good to a broke guy like me lol
I just ordered a set from Summit Racing Equipment here in Texas, and plan on running them tubeless on my 40 Ford wheels on my RPU. 6.50x16 & 500/525-16. Half the price of Firestones.
