Cold galv as primer?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sideways_403, Mar 1, 2011.

  1. I've been stripping the paint back on an OT car and laying cold galv (out of a rattle can) on the metal, the car is out in the weather so I wanted a rust proofing paint on the metal.

My question is, will cold galv be an acceptable primer or will there be problems? I'm not going for a high quaility paint finish here, it's a 4WD and will be used as such, my concern is about the durability and rust proofing. I am on an extremely tight budget of course, I will be spraying the car with an industrial enamel paint. Would be great if I can keep the car in this paint instead of rubbing it back and priming it properly.

    Thanks

It's not a primer. What does the manufacturer say about top coating it?

Cold galvanizing paint is junk. Doesn't stick worth a damn, doesn't prevent rust. It's just a gimmick. It has zinc in it, which is supposed to have a cathodic protection effect, though I have serious doubts as to how well this works in a paint on application. Galvanized steel is an electroplating process. Sorta reminds me of the difference between gold plated and gold paint.
