Cole Foster '54 chop ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by wrenchbender54, Nov 5, 2006.

  1. Anyone know which back-glass Cole used when they chopped Mike Ness' '54? Looks like the same one he used on the blue '54. I love the way he chops those mid 50's chevies. I plan on chopping my '54 this winter, but I can't decide what to use for a back-glass. I need to find something that's going to flow. Seems like Cole has it nailed down.

i think it was from an early 50s ford. I would use the 150 model rear window i think they look better.

  3. why not use the stock glass? i'm going to this winter also.

  4. stock glass should be less work, also. just make some relief cuts along the bottom and lay that fucker down! how far are you going to chop it? i think 4 inches looks killer.

I have a '46-48 Chevy rear glass in my '53. It's smaller than the 150 window, and it'll lay down a lot farther and still flow.

You have three options. Pm Cole on the HAMB here, send a message to Ness himself www.blackkatkustoms.com or Cole at his site www.salinasboys.com. I hope the info I gave you will help ya out. KNUX!

I have a club coupe, it has different glass than the bel-air or 54, more like the 52-earlier. I would say whatever donor car you can find would be the best.

Yeah, get rid of that wrap around rear glass. Ness' car has the Chevy biz coupe window, I believe. You know another that fits really well, and has the correct curvature..is a '47 Nash. Good luck finding one though. Cole's has the '50 Plymouth biz coupe rear window, don't listen to these guys...a Shoebox window will look like shit! It's got too much bow in it.

I don't think the shoebox window will look like shit at all..
The pics above look perfect to me,and i also used one in my 53 and think it came out pretty good.
The do have a lot of curve to them though, so there is some work that needs to be done to the crown of the roof to make it flow right..
But they can look pretty damn good...
    NICE work Custom54!

  16. From what I've noticed on '53-4 Chevies with the Ford backglass is, the arch along the bottom of the glass doesn't match up well with the stock Chevy belt line trim.
I've got a '54 club coupe, and I think the factory backglass looks huge when you use them in a chop. The wrap around glass just doesn't look right to me. I have a couple of options right now. I could use a 50 Ford backglass and rear roof skin, and I also can get my hands on a 49-52 Chev fleetline backglass and skin. I'm looking for a smaller glass that flows well, and matches the contour of the body. Maybe I'm just out to lunch on this one. I'll have to check into the Ply. business coupe idea.
As far as how much to take off, I'm leaning towards the 3-4" range. I haven't quite decided yet. Maybe more, who knows.

49-52 chevy rear window glass is pretty tall it would have to be layed back far, i like 40s chevy and shoe box windows, wrap around windows look the best but i think they need to be shortened so lexan is prolly the best bet too keep stock look

I am thinking of choping my 53 Belair soon. I have a 50 merc backlight I am thinking of putting in mine. I didn't lay it up on the car or any thing yet , but I think it will flow pretty good.

I'm telling you, '1946-48 Chevy back glass lays down nice in a chopped '53-54. Coupe & Sedan are the same, the rubber is easy to get, the glass is available if you break it, and it fits the contour of the '54 Stainless pretty closely. It's much more square and flatter than shoebox Ford. I know - I have one in my attic that I did not use because it was too round and too curved to get the laid-down look I wanted.
