Collecting parts for future projects?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by borderboy1971, Jul 28, 2011.

  1. I'm not sure if Im a hoarder or wise? I tend to collect parts for my future projects WELL in advance. I mean, I've collected stuff for cars that are about 5-8thish on my list of priorities. Anybody else doing these "chess" moves?

I have some stuff that I acquired in 1969 for my current project. It was much cheaper then.

I finally stopped buying "spare" motors. That started to be a problem, but then again I have used them or stripped a couple for broken parts on running projects/drivers.

    I'm guilty,but I call it frugal planning.

  5. There are four classes of cars in my life:

    Cars I'm building

    Cars I'm gonna build

Cars I'd love to build but probably never will be able to

Cars I'll never get to build in a million years

I collect parts for all of 'em. :D

If I get a deal on it, ya I buy parts and hold on to them. The ones I hold on to are for a car I'm building in my mind, the parts I'll let go of are, "ya I might want to build something that can use it, but if I can make money it's gone." Those parts I don't actively try to sell, if someone I know needs them I'll sell them/trade them.

I got parts for cars I know I'll never have. They make for good bartering material! Always nice to help a brother out in need if you can also. Had a pair of '64 Impala spindles I got for $20 at a local swap that came in handy when my buddy lost a wheel off his.

  11. I do the same thing. I have an Edelbrock x1 intake with 6 strombergs and no engine to put it on! Hahaha

yup..nothing like having the stuff right there when you need it

  13. See, I'd have a car all built in my head for that already. Maybe a sweet scalloped, white '58 Impala with chrome reverse wheels and tuck n roll upholstery. Girls just love tuck n roll.:D

I think its the only way to build on a budget. If you've got a fat wallet you can chase all the rad parts you want and be able to plunk down the cash, whatever the cost. If you are an average guy living on an average wage you have to let the parts come to you for a fair price. So it only makes sense to take your time and have a couple projects in mind and allow the parts to float to the surface. I've been making a pile of (mostly)original deuce roadster parts for the last three years and I am amazed what I've fallen into for a reasonable price but I'm keeping in mind its a ten year project in the making. There's nothing like pulling something from the pile and say " I knew I saved this for something!":D

I do it, then I sell those parts cuz I realize I need to focus on the current project. I usually get through selling about half and then I start buying more stuff for cars I don't have. Swap Meets are fun what can I say?

They don't make this stuff anymore, I grab it when I see it and can afford it.

I find myself wanting to bid on some cool hot rod part on Ebay, only to come to the realization I don't own a Studebaker engine, or Cadillac engine, or whatever. But I might someday! :D I also hate to part with any of my stash even though I know I will never live long enough to use it all.

Maybe you can't die as long as you have projects to complete. :p

Im guilty! but it is the cheapest way to build, I'm gunna have an 28 roadster body minus doors for about $600 and no intent to build it for atleast 5 years....

The difference with it for me is that i'll let anything for a spare project go for a decent price because i know there is a TON of better stuff out there at cheap prices, I'll keep upgrading until I get to building it

  22. We all have this problem. I wonder if there is a twelve step program?

  23. Guilty as charged, or you run across something that you have no recollection of ever buying it. Like Xmas without the wrapping paper and bows...

  24. Hmmmm........guilty.....it is just a symptom of the disease/hobby. Bought moldings for a 57 150 Chevy before I found a car:eek:. lately I opt out on some swap meets and save fuel and time ,I just go over the garage and look at all the stuff hanging around. The scary part is deciding whether to throw something out, because two weeks later someone will need it:mad:, happened twice this year already. ;) Ok, gotta go, therapy starts in a few minutes!:D

That's exactly how I am doing my 48. I've bought parts a little at a time over the last 10 years. Now after 6 years of being off the road it's finally coming togetheras I am finishing up the wiring this weekend. Couldn't afford it all at once so "I built it one piece at a time"....hey somebody should use that in a country song!

I have 3 projects Im working on. Of coarse I havean order I would like to finish them in. I been collecting parts for a while and I even buy stuff to hang on the wall just cause its cool. I have a perfect 39 Ford truck grille hanging on the wall. Thats the only part of the truck I have, sure would like to have the rest. Does that make me a hoarder?

I have lockers fulla crap that I'm gonna use in the cars I'm gonna get runnin when I get to em.
    OH GOD,,,,,I'M THAT GUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, pickin parts when the deal is too good to pass only makes sence.
It keeps you from havin too much money, and will benifit either you, or the next steward of your dream. I was negotating a sale of a project car to a guy and when I told him I had a stash of parts he was innit to winnit.
Sad part was I had the car for 8 years but aparently no time. He had it upnrunnin in three weeks. He did spend some long green to do that though.

I just call it bargain shopping, I have been planning to build a model a sedan since I was in high school 13 years ago. I bought the frame first and that was when I first thought up the car, I then bought the body six years ago and four years ago I bought the hemi motor for it and I have been collecting other random parts for it over the whole time, rearend, headlights ect. when I finally get around to building it the project should go pretty quick since I will have most of the parts. many cars have come and gone in my life but that one is still in the back of my mind and is currently just a pile of parts sitting in storage.
