I have a couple of pairs of somewhat rusty 1940 California license plates I want to restore. Is there a color code for the correct color? Far too many of the 'restored' plates I see are way too yellow - not orange toned like the originals and what's with the high gloss finish which the originals never had - they had a satin/low gloss finish when new? Or should I just have the paint store match the paint on a mint original pair I have? Thanks guys for any help....

Having the paint store mix a batch you would be a good choice but I always feel that "School Bus Yellow" is a close match. One of those 2 choices will be your best option if you want to paint the plates yourself. Good luck.

Used Krylon School Bus Yellow a couple of times, very close.

All 48 states had black and white, just look at any old photo.
