Im looking for advice on how to secure the steering column to the firewall. Ive got a 51 Chevy pickup, and plan to use the stock column and wheel. That may change, but how are you guys doing it? Pics would be great. Thanks.
Sorry, don't have pics, and my car is in storage for the off-season, but I used a piece of heavy duty truck exhaust pipe, cut a couple of tabs in it, and bolted the tabs to the floor, with lots of reinforcement. Made a bracket to bolt that to the underside of the dashboard, then slipped the steering column through that, and secured it.
I went down to Pep boys, saw a chrome straight exhaust tip, you know....the kind that sticks out from under your bumper when you put "duelles-pipess" on your ride. That thing fit nice & snug over the bottom end of my Ididit column and the nice part was that the one end had a nice clean rolled edge on it. I cut the appropriate sized hole in the firewall, welded it in and, viola............column secured.
in my 49 i just used a simple floor mount from ididit( $20) think they said it was for a 55 chevy car. used the stock colum drop on top................dave
